I have a 100x40x40cm aquarium which works out as 160 litres (40 usg). Currently it has an internal 900lph (240gph)filter. I will be switching to an external filter so there’s less clutter.

Does anyone have any experience with using soil as a cheap planted tank substrate?

Good cheap bulbs for the aquarium?

And then stocking and aquascape ideas.

I have a 29 outdoor tank with organic soil capped with sand but it only gets natural sunlight its more of an experiment to see if i can grow some plants in the summer without getting major algae. You can find decent led lights on amazon for reasonable prices. As far as the stocking a 40 has a very lot of options but wait for a stocking pro to chime in. The aquascape you could do some rocks and driftwood with some rhizome plants attached to the driftwood or rocks. Do a search on aquascsping and you will get millions of ideas. Good luck. Keep us updated and post pics when you can!!

Thanks! At the moment there’s just a pink female convict in there but she’ll be moving to the 5ft tank when I’m ready to start scaping. Unfortunately won’t be for a while as I’m in the uk and I’m doing my gcses so I’ll begin at the end of June and I have the whole summer to perfect it.

Tank right now. Will the sharp edges hurt her?
