Currently I have two 15 watt bulbs for my 40 gallon. I wanted to plant amazon swords and some java fern and a couple other low to medium light plants. What bulbs should I get from my LFS to accomplish this?

Thanks.

You have less then 1 WPG so the amazon sword might not do so good. I think the java fern would be ok. If I were you I would go to a hardware store and get a bulb in the 6700K range. They work great, are in the right color spectrum for plants, and you can get a dozen of them for the price of 1 bulb at the lfs. I am assuming you just have standard flourecent bulbs which mean you won't be able to get much more wattage without changing your fixtures.

I'll check out the hardware store in my town. Thanks.

How many watts per gallon do I need for amazon swords?

Ive only had one and it was in a 75 gallon with less then 1 wpg and it looked horrible. I moved it to my 120 gallon with about 2 wpg cfl and it is looking better but it is going slow.

Ok. I'll look for other light fixtures. Thanks for the help.
