Hi so I’ve had this 55 for a while now and want to at least grow guppy grass and anubias in it. In the past when I threw guppy grass in it turned yellow/clear and died off. Now I have this light 75 watt and a cheap aqueon light on one side of the tank. A month ago I threw in some Anubias and guppy grass in there it seems to be doing well, the guppy grass seems to somewhat hanging on there.
I’ve been leaving the light in for about 9 hours.
There’s no algae anywhere on the tank.
-I dose some flourish comprehensive in about twice a week
-the light I have is similar to this one
-these are my parameters
-I’m interested in getting more plants to increase jungle like look for higher guppy fry survival rate

The light is pretty weak; so you need to focus on plants that require low light. Anubias (and there are many types) generally grow in lower lights than other plants but they are slow growers so some people find them not so exciting. Java fern is another plant that generally grows ok in low light. Having said that your light is really weak.

I wouldn't spend more money on fertilizer at this point. Btw is the tank near a window ? Is it getting some indirect sunlight ?

i guess given the fact that I got this one from a previous owner who had 2 of these on an 80 gal with sand substrate as well and I can’t remember what plants he had but they weren’t low light.

What kind of bulb does it have - i can only find listings on ebay that doesn't give much in the way of specification just ebay listings similar to what you have in your image. Also remember the light at the top of the tank will be a lot higher than at the bottom - but i find it hard to believe that bulb provides enough light (or a balance spectrum) for plants that need higher amount of lights.

it took me long to find a similar light. I just realized they both have different bulbs. One has something called a cree bulb and the other one says it’s a Philips 16 w one

16w sounds like led 75 equiv . Using a handy table on google that is around 1600 lumens. The light i use is 4250 lm but it also has better coverage and spectrum designed for plants. Is my light overkill - well not really but you could probably get away with something a little smaller (i have a fluval plant 3.0). I'm not suggesting you run out and get a fluval plant 3.0 as they are a little pricey and there are cheaper solutions but i just wanted to give you some comparative numbers.

I've grown plants without a light before but then i had the benefit of adjacent sunlight and i wonder if your friend had the benefit of a bit of sunlight.

I think you can grow some plants in your tank but they will grow slowly and you want species that do well in low light. java fern is actually pretty nice plant so i would start with that.

yeah

Yeah I have a 3.0 on my 30 gal I’m going for more of a low tech there as well I have java fern windelov and guppy grass there I had high algae problems but I have that under control. So what light would you recommend for the 55. My understanding is that 3-5 watts per gallon is recommended?

par value is more useful than watts per gallon. I can' t give you recommendation since i put plant 3.0 on all my tanks. I like them but i know that some folks find them too expensive. Hopefully others will give you first hand experience (I could list the normal competitors but haven't used them myself).
