Planning on Hornwort as background plant.

Good Day,

I am planning to have hornwort as my background plant, I have read online that they prefer to be floating at the top of the tank which I plan to avoid. my research also said that they could be planted in the substrate but the part the goes underground rots and destroys the part next to it making it look horrible.

my question:

Would it be ok to just strap the hornwort on a small rock? if yes, how would it spread? I want to have a blooming hornwort in the background.

I don't know about "blooming", but to spread it, you just break it off and tie it down. Some have issues at the tie down point with rot.

alright thanks for reply asap! is it true that it could "thrive" in any light condition even without c02 supplements? how about fertilizers? there are different suggestions online and the only thing that is common is that these things are hardy.

IME, you can tell when the nitrates are getting high, because the Hornwort goes nuts. No ferts needed if you have a stocked tank.
The more light the better and faster it grows.

thanks so much, I just need a fast plant in there to help alleviate some of the toxins in the tank and help with oxygenation, it looks really cool too.

It's a decent plant, it just doesn't root in so it can be tricky to keep in place. Plant weights work pretty well.

You can weigh it down by sticking a rock over it. I have a pile of rocks in the corner of my tank and I just stuck clippings into crevices in between the rocks.. The weight holds it even with lots of movement from the filter/air stone.

It works really well to keep nitrates down as well. I was having trouble with nitrates over 40ppm even with weekly water changes until I added the hornwort. Now even on water change days it's only around 20.

I'm pretty sure you could glue it to ornaments as well to hold it in place.
