Planning For A Breeding Pair Of Angels

Hello FishLore! To give myself some motivation while doing some rehab/maintenance on the free 46 gallon bowfront I just acquired, I figured I'd start planning what to put into it So, first things first: is this a big enough tank for a breeding pair? (46 gallon bow: 36" L, 20" H, 16" W at the widest point)

Assuming it is, if my intention is breeding, should I even consider keeping other fish in the tank? At a minimum, I might like to have a shoal of cories or loaches, if they wouldn't badger the angels.

As for getting a mating pair of angels, it sounds like potentially the simplest thing to do is to obtain several (up to 6?) and watch for them to pair up? Besides potentially rehoming the failed contestants of the dating game, are there any major downsides to this?

Thanks!

I think that sounds perfect! Cories are a great idea
I go to fish auctions once in awhile and a lot of breeders will sell a 5 pack of them for less than $10, nice angels too
I think 5 koi angels went for maybe $12 max??? So def check out some local fish auctions!

If you are planning to raise the eggs on your own cories might be fine. If you are among on letting the parents raise them you may not want any other fish in the tank.

My mated angels will not spawn if there are dither fish in the tank. They will spawn with c ories and ottos however once the wigglers were free swimmimg/learning to swim they were eaten if they got to low to the ground or wandered to far from mom and dad. My 2 cories managed to eat around the entire spawn of freeswimming fry in 16 hours.

You have a big enough tank to allow the parents to raise them themselves. As for obtaining a breeding pair yes you can buy 6 to 8 juvenile and raise the till they start to pair off or buy an adult breeding pair.

Ooh, I never even thought about that. The local aquarium club is marine, unfortunately, but there are definitely others in the greater DC metro area! I'll have to do some browsing around

Yikes! As much as I like cories, I don't think I want to feed them a premium diet of angel wigglers :S I'd like to see parents raising their young (unless they turn out to be terrible at it after a few tries, I guess!), so keeping them alone in the tank may be the way to go. I gather that snails can be dangerous to new eggs, so I'm guessing shrimp aren't really any safer!

Yes bizaliz had her snail eat half the clutch of eggs in one foul swoop. Then the parents are the rest due to the threat from the snails.

I'm not sure about shrimp to be honest.

Yea, just go into google and type "fish auctions in [insert your area]" and hopefully something will pop up!
Theres two clubs in my area who offer auctions both in the spring and fall, however, I've only been to one club's
Saltwater clubs might still auction off freshwater fish possibly??? You can always message and ask
