Picking A Betta...

Good morning from Sydney,

I have got my 15L tank set up and ready waiting for a betta. But I’m stuck on what betta I should get.

I understand it’s all down to personal preference. Myself I want one with a lot of flair and colours so what type is best for me? A half moon?

If possible show me what yours looks like

Thanks

Jon

This is my betta. If you want a colorful one, get a male.

There are some beautiful females out there too, despite the fact that most people believe that females are always dull in color.

If you want that big flare and fancy fins, I would either go with a Super Delta Tale/ Dumbo Ear Malle Betta Fish, or...... A Halfmoon/ Dumbo Ear Male Betta Fish!! My avatar picture is of a Super Delta Tale/Dumbo Ear Betta Fish!!

Umm, well I was going to show y'all a pic of my betta but Coradee already did that for me that's my beta! But I would suggest a mustard beta, they are really cool in my opinion and have style.

A pretty cool one of you want a big flair are the "rose petal" bettas. Very similar to a half moon but they've got more rays in their fins so when they flair it's more of a 2/3 to 3/4 moon than a half moon. Pretty cool little fellas if you are looking at Betta Splendens.

So I have made my decision and I picked up a betta, a bit more costly than I first thought paying $65 for one male Dragon scale rose tail (See Photo).

He is currently nameless, so give me some suggestions? Open to anything

Or a Koi betta. : ) Even your local big box stores have thse available now lately...

Here’s my fearless, curious and bold guy. He was a misship from a local lfs...

He's dark. SO MAYBE something along the lines of a "darker" name...perhaps...? Like ShinobI or something heh...

There was a $10,000 breeding betta pair at Aquashella (I think). They had a rare mutation that resulted in a double caudal.

I’m going on $65 AUD which is about $45 USD

The big pet chain stores do sell bettas at about $10 USD but as you can imagine don’t look all that great.

The breeder I picked it up from has a room of about 80 bettas all with 2.5 Gallon tanks so they are cared for 10x better than a normal shop

FWIW I've seen bettas advertised by breeders and importers here in Australia for as much as $90 for a single or $150 for a sibling pair. Compared to the $7.50-10 ones in chain stores $65 is pretty reasonable for a fancy that's been bred/imported and well cared for in Australia.

The best betta you could get is one based on personality rather than what they look like. You could go to a pet store and interact with one to see how that goes. I recommend getting one that is super eager to see you and barks at you. Such betta would be trying to go through the container's side to greet you.

Even though eagerly barking bettas in the store are best, I had a dumbo earred betta before that would completely ignore me all the time, ignore and not be aggressive when housed with other bettas, and would just like to sit on plants and stare and study them. Unfortunately, I ended up euthanizing him due to physical injuries, and I have been unable to find one that reminded me much of him.

Marbled bettas are fun. I love to watch the color transformations over time. Used to be black and white. Nowhes like light pink and teal with some red.

Barking betta? How will I know if my Edith is barking?

Barking betta? How will I know if my Edith is barking?

The betta doesn't emit an audible sound, of course, but they make a barking motion with their mouth as if they are happy to see you. They might do this after you do a water change; after you feed them; or while you are staring and waving at them. It might happen more often if you interact with them a lot. I have two bettas on my desk, and they see me all the time.

The best I could do to capture this behavior on short notice is the posted video in this reply. It is only two barks and not in a row. Usually barking would be 3 or so times in a row.

This betta is being treated with antibiotics right now, so his tank is discolored

Edith does this! It's so cute. I didn't know it has a name..
