Picked up my Orange Shrimp today - So Excited!

I finally picked up my Orange Shrimp today! Ive been checking the water for days now, and each time I got good readings. So, I finally decided that it was all okay. 3 weeks of cycling without fish, with live plants, wood and slate! Well, I went and picked up my 6 Orange Shrimp which I had held for me. I got home and 1 had died This was not good news, however whilst they were acclimating I rang the LFS who said they would happily replace the poor fella. At the moment one is buzzing around the tank, one is sitting underneath the Frogbit which is carrying around in the current, one is climbing all over the driftwood, one is curiously bugging my Nerite snails and one is sat directly ontop of the filter intake. I thought he was struggling at first, and put my finer over the filter to see how strong it was. It wasn't very strong at all, infact, it wasn't even pulling my Fluviatilis in. He moved, but on his own swam all the way back and walked back over to the filter. Maybe he likes it? Maybe he is a she? I haven't a clue. They are all young, the LFS said they had been born/hatched 2 months ago. I am so excited to finally have shrimps in my tank

Nice...I love shrimps. Are they Neocaridina or Caridina species? I can't wait until you get shrimplets ;-)

They are Orange Sakura Shrimp, or so the label in the LFS has me believing. Neocaridina Heteropoda var. Orange.

I can't wait for Shrimplets either I was so excited for them I have prepared ahead. They are currently hiding out amongst the heavily plantage but occasionally one of them comes out to poke the Nerite Snails eye and then run off again. Comical, and not even had them a day I was hoping I would see them more however I realise they might be stressed or scared and so have left them to hang behind the driftwood and plants.

Give them time and they will hanging out everywhere. Sooner or late you will have lots of them ;-). Cutest little things to see are the shrimplets.

I have Red ones in my 100 gallon community tank. I have yellows in their own tank and I'm about start another tank thinking of getting Orange Neo or maybe Green ones....still debating.

My LFS had some Green ones, some were a sort of luminous colour others blended in with the plants. The Orange stood out as they were on a black substrate and the colours just pinged. It appealed to me as I also have a black substrate but also because they are a colour morph of Red Cherry, and are good beginners Shrimp. I cannot wait for them to start becoming themselves.

It amazes me how cute tiny baby shrimp are. I have red cherry shrimp and I finally covered my intake with a sponge and all of a sudden I have a ton of baby shrimp in various sizes....so cute.

Yay!!! I love shrimps as pets, I can watch them for hours to be honest. I'm in the process of making my 2nd 10 Gallon Tank as we speak.

Must agree I think it is like a fever. I have only had the little things for half a day and already I have looked at small shrimp tanks and set ups for a shrimp colony! Multiple Tank Syndrome or Multiple Shrimp Syndrome?

Dan, I think you should make a shrimp tank exclusive ;-) You can get two species, Neocaridinia and Caridinia

Google this shrimp: Orange Eye Blue Tiger shrimp

Oh wow. They are incredible! Ah this is pushing me to getting a Shrimp only tank even more! I have been oogling this for the past few hours:

Only problem is raising the funds for it. So tempted. Could get it cheaper too but minus the equipment most likely. Much more expensive here in the UK, tanks cost a fortune.

Dan.

I've seen that, kind of pricey in my books.

I just used a regular 10 gallon/ 37 Liters tank and turned it into a shrimp tank.

Well if your Orange shrimps breed then you can start selling them to raise the funds for your new tank

That was the plan Yeah very pricey but over here its hard to find cheap tanks, especially when you haven't got a car, which rules out Gumtree as everything is always a few miles out of reach. Still, you can get hold of tanks for half that, I got my 15Gallon for £50 so I expect to get a cube for much less

How much did you buy your Orange shrimps if you don't mind me asking?

They were £15 for 5, or £3.50 each. So I got 6 at £18.50 as I only had a £20 note on me, saved £2.50 buying them in the 'deal'. Expensive but its the closet LFS to me that has a large and varied selection that I can also get home within an hour of.

Okay, it is basically the same here for Orange shrimps.

Sorry I forgot about the conversion for pounds to dollars I have to keep reminding myself that investments in this hobby can go a long way, and so its nearly always worth it.

No worries, I was using a conversion calculator ;-) I agree. Also it has an impact on our health...it is a great way to relax and relieve stress by watching our tanks.

I can't say definitely how its relieved me as of yet, as it is a relatively new tank. However, even empty and planted it was very relieveing to look into whilst I was in my exam period about a month back. Worth every penny in my eyes.

Another chance will come around I am sure. Patience is the key with this hobby. Who knows you might find an even better deal in a months time?!

Hmm, after finding some Shrimp munching on the sludge in the filter this morning, I took a look for the rest of the 'colony'. It appears that they have all lost their vivid orange colouration and have become a sort of murky brown colour, not very interesting and quite bland. Why could this be? I have heard they can lose colour when pregnant but they are all like it, water parameters are all good, they are fed on shrimp pellets and algae wafers every few days and eat the leftovers in between.

I've never kept orange shrimps before but I will. I do notice with my yellow and reds that sometimes they become a dull color depending on their mood or what food they eat.

Perhaps it is the sludge that they are eating?

Hmm. I do hope so. They were a very nice colour before, but not all of them have been in the filter yet to get anything, the majority have only seen algae wafers and shrimp pellets. I notice they are normally duller when I first turn the lights on but they generally brighten up within an hour, but since I added my CPD they have stayed underneath the driftwood and tend to not come out as much. The CPDs aren't big enough to eat them and don't bother them either. Maybe they need some time.
