Pic Of Neon Tetra Disease

I know without a doubt that one of my neon tetras has NTD. I actually have 3 in isolation but this one is nearing the end with growths on body and wasting away. I have been treating for various things over the last few months and nothing has helped. Just thought you may be interested in what it officially looks like. He’s still eating and swimming fine right now but I will be euthanizing when he starts suffering.

Hey Goldiemom, thanks for posting this.

One of my neon tetras has that same kind of discoloration, but no strange growths or deformaties. It still schools with the other tetras, but his neon blue stripe has dulled and his abdomen has those pale white areas like you have pictured here. I was afraid it might also be NTD, but I couldn't get him netted so I just kinda let it go and hoped for the best. That was several weeks ago. He hasn't gotten any better, but also hasn't gotten any worse. His coloration has been dulled for several weeks. Does this sound like NTD to you? Should I make another effort to net him?

I'm not trying to sound like I'm questioning you or anything, but isn't NTD contagious? Aren't you worried about the other 2 being with it?

Unless you have done the correct microscopic procedures to confirm presence of the spores you will not be able to diagnose microsporidium NTD.

It is well known among people who study fish diseases that Columnaris and NTD look very similar to the naked eye and a diagnosis cannot be made on this basis.

So unfortunately there has to be doubt and there is nothing official about your supposition.

In addition, Columnaris is much more likely than NTD in the hobby according to the scientific literature.

Columnaris s one of the diseases I attempted to treat. No response to treatment. As far as it being contagious, yes it is. If you read my original post, all 3 are in a isolation tank. One has a growth on his lip, one has a rotting tail and then this one. I removed them all several months ago from the community tank. I posted pics back then and took the advice of other members in treatment(I believe you, Redshark, refused to offer advice.) I am not hear to argue, just to offer some education. If you would like to put the fish under a microscope I am more than willing to allow you to do so. I have treated for Columnaris, fin and mouth rot, septicemia, fungus, etc. I have used Kanaplex, Furan-2, Melafix, Fungus Clear, salt, Sulfaplex, kanamycin flakes, Artemis, and even Naladin as a last resort at the recommendation of a well known member. I am convinced at this point that it is NTD.

I can’t tell you what to do. It could be something else. I have treated for everything possible and NTD is the only thing mine can be. Best of luck.

They are all in QT for NTD. I have 8 more in the community tank that are fine.

No, actually, I said I had already given my advice in an earlier post which you acknowledged.

My advice was to read the one major scientific study on Neon Tetra Diseases which you were unaware of and which you chose to ignore.

This is regretable as significant resources were expended in engaging the world's scientists for several years to find out more about this subject for our benefit. It is rare that such resources are targeted at the ornamental fish trade so it is important that we take heed of the findings.

Here are links to the paper once more:

I apologize, I had thought you were referring to the fact that you had recommended not getting the Neons in a 10 G tank. Why do you feel I ignored the articles? I read them although some of it was Greek to me. However, I treated for columnaris with no success. Through process of elimination, I have come to the conclusion that my Neons do have NTD. I’m so sorry if this upsets you but after trial and error and a lot of reading, that is my conclusion. I am the one treating them and witnessing the outcome. Just as I can’t be sure without a microscope, you can’t be sure it is not. We will have to agree to disagree on this one. Thank you for your understanding.

Well, I just euthanized all 3 of the fish with NTD. Going on 3 months in QT. I let them continue on until they began to suffer. RIP

Some pics of my current sick neon tetra.
This is the third one (I guess) that has been in this condition.
Couple of tetras were like this and just disappeared. No carcass to be found.
And one more female tetra seems to be looking like this, even though she seems healthy now (has the lialesion kind stuff on the start of tail/mid body)
I think I need to clear this batch of neons and replace with a new group entirely.

The tell-tale of NTD is a brownish lesion in the dorsal area or cadual pedacule, or bent spines
