Petsmart Fish Party

mods, feel free to delete if we're not allowed to make fun of petsmart outright or whatever.

I saw this on instagram and it made me lol.

like yeah, i'm sure you're gonna give people accurate advice about your fish lol. I wonder how many bettas with tiny containers, common goldfish and plecos they'll sell that day?

so who's gonna crash the party at their local petsmart and give people some real information about their fish? it's not like y'all have anything else better to do on a saturday. (joking, ofc. but it's true for me at least.)

What is this for? If they aren't having a sale on aquarium items, I ain't gonna notice them. Like are they promoting? I see no use in this event. The hate in the comments is reaal though.

lol. they've been doing this for all their pet categories for a few months. they did it for rodents (you could pet/handle some of them), reptiles, cats, dogs, birds.

i'm afraid if I walk into petsmart I'll walk out with at least one plant

I heard all top fin product we’re going to be on sale during this event. Not the best quality but perhaps a decent buy for some essentials

They are apparently handing out coupons from noon-3pm for 30% off 'select' Topfin products. Might be useful if you are buying replacement filter media or something...I doubt it would apply to aquarium kits or filters, but who knows. Clearly the promotion is directed at young kids (there is some craft project where you make a crown or something). I forsee a lot of dead fishes and sad kids in the coming weeks

Also, just a note that Big Al's (in Canada) is doing an in-store only No Tax Event starting today, thru Sunday close. Includes livestock

Yeah, they give just terrible advice, BUT, they recently taped paper lables over common and sailfin plecos saying they need 100 gallon minimum, so it's a step in the right direction (previously said 40).
It kinda sucks, because as soon as I start asking actual fish questions to the employees, they normally say "oh, I'm not actually part of the pet care" or "I'm not the fish person" when seconds before they were giving (questionable) advice to someone about treating their fish.
I have also overheard them asking people getting fancy goldfish if they actually know how big they get, so that's something as well.
And the Petco near me has taken up the policy of asking people their tank size and stocking before they buy fish and making suggestions that are actually good.
Course, tons of dead/dying fish all over, but I think most of the employees are trying.

I think part of the issue with staff not being knowledgeble at the big box stores is that they are usually very young - often students working part time, in a lot of cases. Although the company should take the time to ensure their staff is properly educated on the basics. If my 9 year old can understand the Nitrogen cycle, so can the 17 year old working at Petsmart.
I was in my local Petsmart a few weeks back (the one where when I asked what the Ph of their water was, I was told 'between 6 and 8", or as my husband said "somewhere between coffee and bleach".) They do have a lady working there that was likely in her 60s, and she was talking to a customer about betta fish. The customer was a lady in her 70s or 80s, with a wheeled walker. On the seat of the walker, she had about 6 cups with male bettas in them... and was planning to take them home and put them all into one tank. The staff member was gently explaining to her why she couldn't do that, and what the needs of each fish would be. It was the first time I actually heard a staff member in one of those stores sound like she knew her stuff. It must drive her crazy that her co-workers don't have a clue!!! Hopefully she'll educate them too
