Petsmart Failed At Their Betta Sorority

So for my birthday I went to a brand new petsmart. I went to the betta center and found no females... Kinda sad but I went to the tanks and saw female bettas!! I was so happy petsmart clued in! It was fairly well decorated but their were only two of them... No nipped fins but they were chasing eachother. Eventually one got tired and slowly floated towards the filter intake and was stuck on it. ( I thought that but she swam away.) I went over to the manger and told her what was wrong with the tank, two female bettas in a small tank and too strong filter for bettas. Just wanted to share this somewhat cool idea. Also they had at least one male betta in every tank possible!

In my local Petsmart, they have at least 3 in the snail tank with 5 inches of water :hungover:

Sounds like a petsmart thing to do... I once saw 30gouramis in a 10 gallon with a ripped finned betta. I said out loud in front of the employee "Wow they so stupid and don't know gouramis would kill bettas" She told me he would be bought soon. I said "Not soon enough" and walked away to the betta center.

PetSmart makes me cringe, but I go there for feeder insects. I haven’t bought a fish at PetSmart in over two years.

I refer to the place as PetDumb, even when I'm there.

My nearest LFS is two hours away and I don't go to Petco or Petsmart still. Not saying that you're doing anything wrong, but don't let distance be an excuse

I only go to my lfs. PetSmart and Petco overcharge for everything and quality is terrible.

Yep I'm only buying crickets. After my guppy incidence I'm done! But I do get bettas from select petsmarts in my city because the petlands have all dead bettas aswell as petvalus. And my only proper fish store is way to pricey on bettas!

Same but we go in to the city pretty often. Plus my mom understands about petsmarts quality.

Well this petsmart is 2 hours away.... We went to the city for other reasons on my birthday. The one by my house (*cough* 20mins away) used have the best quality ever! They had so many happy healthy bettas swimming! And then they went down to haveing less fish and worst quality. We have one really go LFS but its aswell 2hours away in the same town. It has bettas in 5gallons for sale. Wasteing gas..... Or money on fish..... It all depends

My pet smart does a decent job at keeping fish but the bettas live in those tiny containers and it’s awful

Compared to my Walmart. the petsmart is a high quality aquarium with round the clock fish experts. My LFS is the best but they keep the bettas in even tinier cups and filthier water. Its fun to look at how much quality they put in the other fish though. And also look at the saltwater fish there

At least at my petsmart they don’t have plecostomus in l gallon tanks and the filter intakes don’t have dead/dying fish stuck on them and all the fish don’t stay away from the filter output. And my petsmart doesn’t put 40 goldfish all in a 5 gallon tank. And my petsmart doesn’t have a weird mold that they claim is algae (it might be but not any algae I’m familiar with) so they just shove all the plecos in there to clean it up. At least at my petsmart all the snails are alive and not on their backs.

I am aware that Walmart’s and Petsmart both don’t sell high quality fish or or keep the fish in high quality tanks but if I choose to get fish. Then I choose Petsmart because to me it’s the clear contender. They even make sure they bettas have warm clean water!!!!

At my PetSmart there is a girl that every-time I even look at the Betta's she runs over yelling not to keep them in a bowl. It's great she's trying to raise awareness about how to properly keep bettas, but annoying as heck as A) I already know how to keep Betta fish and B) I don't need e lecture when I am looking!! Not to mention they are the worst looking Bettas I have ever seen so maybe she could take some time to care for the ones at the store! They are all yellow or white in color anyways, and don't look great. Though I did see one nice crown tail today. [/rant] haha

It’s funny you say that. There’s a Petco that I sometimes go to that has some pretty impressive selection of fish. But I recently noticed “cutesy” signs taped all around the tanks on proper fish care, etc. I’m surprised corporate even allows that, if they allowed it at all. Anyway, I noticed a new employee who hounds every potential fish buyer. That’s good and all, but I liked the old mangager much better. For one, I personally felt she was spending way too much time per customer. All I wanted were some plants. Maybe he didn’t care all that much where the fish ultimately ended up, but the fish were a lot healthier and better taken care of. She’s stretching herself too thin and it shows.

The one here has females but they're in cups just like the males.

Putting the males in the other tanks might not be good. They might actually be better off in the cups. There are no small fish stores here. They all closed down when the PetSmart came in. I think they just have too many Bettas at the same time so some sit forever.

They do have some nice ones sometimes. I like mine and he came from there. Right now they have a beautiful blue and white Butterfly that costs $24.95. Mine was $9.95.

Yeah, there was a poor Betta that had swim badder at the store and I took him home to try and give him a better life as I think he just was born with the problems. You would think tat if you are yelling at everyone to give the fish better care, you would notice that one of your fish clearly has issues and would do something about it. And I know he was there for a while as the manager of the store rang me out and told me that the poor guy had been in the store for quite some time.
Either way they still look better at Petsmart and petco than at my LFS!

Ive had it before. I was buying two female bettas and a 10gallon. The 10 gallon wasn't for them but some kid came up to me and told me it wouldnt work. I told him that I have 8 bettas at home and I'm smart enough to not put two females together in a 10gallon.

Maybe it was taylor nicole dean. She wrote on paper and taped it on small fish tanks that aren't suitable for bettas.

I had one that died and brought it back to petco and they are like asking all these questions like did you take the fish out of the water to change it, I said no and they were like oMG! I said it lives in a 5 gallon tank, why would I take him out? Mind blowing! Do I feed it too much etc. I said listen I had the fish fr 3 hrs and t died, clearly the fish wasn't doing well as all my other fish I've had for many many months without deaths. So annoying!! I've kept fish for my than half my life, I think I know what I'm doing haha.
