Petco deplorable betta conditions

I was in Petco in Cleveland, Tennessee today for about 30 seconds.

The problem I saw that caused me to turn right around, no questions asked, was the condition of the bettas. The bettas were being kept in what appeared to be a completely sealed up thick plastic bag, looked to be vacuum sealed edges. There was enough water that if ya held it vertically it filled a small corner, but the bettas were laying flat, ontop of the feeder goldfish tank. The fish could breathe through one gill at a time if they were lucky. The ones who weren't dead already would starve to death soon.

I read that I should post a pro as well as the cons... I saw no pros, sorry.

We have a saying here.

"DeathCo, where the fish come to die"

I think they're all like that !

Well, like all stores, it depends a bit on the specific people working there.
The only thing I get there is driftwood- best selection and cheap prices on mopanI wood.

I wonder if they were sent to them that way or someone took it on themselves to display them that way. Either way somebody should have know better. How awful!!!

I saw our good LFS with their bettas in baggies once. It turned out they were cleaning out and replacing the water in the large cups they keep the fish in. They are cups just the same, but they are about 12 ounces and always clean. I love going in there because I see them selling tanks and giving water to people buying bettas all the time. (yay)

I would have to say that the Petco in Morgantown, WV is very good. Occasionally you will find a dead fish or two on the bottom, but what pet store doesn't have that. I havn't bought fish anywhere else. THey guarantee that you can return any dead fish to up to 15 days of the purchase date, and they will do free water readings. Bettas are always kept nice. THis Petco is for sure....NOT a Deathco.
