Hello everyone. I visited my local PetCo this week, and I noticed some new tanks. My favorite employee there told me that PetCo is switching from carrying the Aqueon brand to the Tetra brand. This includes the bare tanks and the kits. He pointed out that the Tetra kits now have LED lights in them. And once the Aqueon supply is gone, it's gone.

I don't know if this is a nationwide decision, but I was curious: What's your opinion about the decision? What about the tanks? Do you prefer one brand over another?

Voice your opinion in the poll above. And feel free to add comments below.

I have one of each in 55 gallon and honestly can tell no difference. Maybe others will have a differing opinion.

Granted I have limited experience, but I currently own both brands and can't tell the difference. I do prefer the LED lights, but that is a simple add on for any aquarium.

I've only had Aqueon and Marineland tanks. I know Marineland has a cobranding/license agreement with Tetra.

I wonder what prompted Petco to make the switch.

I also have both brands, and have yet to tell the difference.

I know that the employees at a couple of stores that I spoke to were unhappy about the change as they believe Aqueon has better quality tanks. Also, the new Tetra tanks are tempered on all panels so they are not to be drilled. That said, I have also noticed the LED lights in the Tetra kits, although Aqueon does offer fluorescent in their deluxe kits.

Eh a cheap kit is a cheap kit. If I want high quality I'll pick and choose all my parts anyway instead of taking a kit off the shelf.

If Tetra is going to tempered if could be a cost-motivated switch. Tempered is stronger than normal plate glass, so could result in thinner, lighter construction for the same strength ratings. Lighter usually costs less in shipping.

That said, I personally would try to avoid tempered tanks. Too often I have dropped something into my tanks (light fixture, hood with light fixture, shelf above tank), & if a wall shattered out of my tank I think I would die a thousand deaths as I franticly tried to save the former occupants.

Slightly off topic, since it's a Petco Tank Poll. Anybody know what brand they use for their custom tank ordering line? Guess my last step is to call them It's just I always remember to call, way late in the evening lol.

Definitely off topic, I just applied for the aquatics department at my local petco. Maybe if I get the job I can do something about their poorly kept freshwater tanks.

So... I have one of each brand, along with a second aqueon and various other tanks, and my thoughts are: a glass rectangular tank is a glass rectangular tank.

I personally like Aqueon tanks better, but let's be honest, it's a tank

I feel for you Aquatic1, I just found a petco I didn't know about only a mile from home, small one. They do a have a fish dept and 80% of the tanks are in bad condition, I won't even go into the condition of the stock. I did make a mention to the manager as I left. Not that It will do any good as the store is only as good as their manager.

Poll is still open. Vote today!

You can click on the poll to see the results. So far Aqueon is leading the pack, although most respondents say there's no difference between the two.

So what do YOU think?

I only buy bare tanks. The kits usually suck. The aqueon filters are 100% better then tetra filters. That said I will have to go with aqueon.

I just noticed the change at my local petco a few days ago. I was wondering if there is a difference too. They had a few aqueon tanks left, but most were tetra tanks.
