I just added some Water Wisteria to my 3.5. So it has that, an Anubias Nana that is forming it's second new leaf, a Java Fern Windelov, a moss ball, and 3 plastic plants that the tank started with. My Betta loves swimming through and under them. Plants are great if you get the right ones that will live under the conditions you are able to give them.
