I am looking for a good internal filter for my daughter's red eared slider turtle's new 40 gallon tank. I know canisters are a good choice, but for now I am going to stick with an internal filter. I can't afford a canister filter right now. Maybe down the road, but not now.

I did a bunch of research and looked at a lot of internal filters and their specs and their reviews....I came to the conclusion that this one might be my best option. Especially based on the reviews on amazon (good reviews and a lot of people using it for turtle tanks). It has 175 GPH turnover...and the tank will be half full....so that would be approx. 8-9x the tank volume per hour. And the price is right.......

Anyone have any experience or input on this filter? or does anyone feel there is a better option for an internal filter for this set up?

I really like the tetra internal filter (ReptoFilter) that comes with the really cool big rock formation that creates a cool looking waterfall...and it is made specifically for aquatic turtle tanks (or frogs or other semI aquatic animals) I love the way it looks, its very aesthetically pleasing.....but the reviews weren't as good as they were for this filter AND they were much more expensive....

If you"re willing to get a canister for a cheap price you could get a SunSun canister Filter they're cheaper than any of the name Brands. I'm getting my hw302 for about $50.

I actually do have a sunsun on one of my fish tanks. But even those are more than I'd like to spend right now. Not only that, but the stand this tank will be on is a dual stand that will have another 40 on the bottom. And it is a pretty tight squeeze fitting the tanks where we did. So there is no room underneath OR on either side of the tank to even PUT a canister. That is why I am leaning towards internal.

Thanks for the suggestion though!!! I agree that the sunsuns are pretty good quality for the price!

I have and use a fluval nano for my 2 1/2 gallon Ocellatus fry tank and it does a good job. I paid $20.00 for it and I like it. I added my own filter floss and rox 0.8 carbon to the filter. The only thing I don't know much about is turtles. I heard that they make a lot of bio waste if that is true then you still could use the fluval nano but you would have to change the media inside of it more often.

Here is the link to what it looks like.......

Here it is on amazon......

Good Luck!

Thanks but that filter is for only up to 15 gallons. I am looking for a filter for a 40 gallon that will be housing a turtle! And turtles are much messier than fish!!

Has anyone used this Penn Plax filter? or have any suggestions of internal filters with equal or higher GPH? (I believe this one is 175 GPH which is why I said a half full 40 gallon would filter through about 8-9 times per hour)

I am sorry about that! I totally didn't think about the size of your tank!

What about just making your own internal filter. All you would need is a powerhead, water bottle, and your choice of filter media. Most of the internal filters I see don't have much filter media space. Plus you can make it as big/small as you want, and you can customize your choice of filter media.
plus powerheads are pretty cheap, I am pretty sure you can find one on eBay that would suit your needs and cost.

Here is a video of a DIY internal filter for a bigger tank.

Good Luck!

I guess this isn't a very popular filter on fishlore?? I'll have to just rely on the amazon reviews for this one! LOL

Does ANYONE have any other suggestions? Or any reason I should possibly avoid this one?
