I looked at pictures of these after someone mentioned them to my husband and they remind me of cichlids ..... are they?

They are not cichlids at all. Very laid back, mellow fish. Can even be kept in something as small as a 10 gallon tank as they don't require a large area of swimming space.

No, they aren't, they're related to gobies.
They're a type of gudgeon.... lol

Like others said, they aren't. If you like cichlids, maybe try a shell dweller?

I don't know anything about cichlids, they just sorta looked like some of the pictures I had seen of them. I have seen some bright yellow ones at the LFS though I don't recall what species they were. Are there any that are good for beginners? Preferably smaller variety.

Gudgeon or cichlid?

Bright yellow ones sound like electric yellow cichlids, which would not really be for beginners, imo.

Rainbow cichlids are very hardy and easy to care for, ime.

What tank(stock) and what size? Rams are good, I've heard good things on shell dwelling cichlids. They are small and could look similarish to a gudgeon. Maybe.

I hadn't decided on tank yet .... it wouldn't be either of our current tanks. Thanks
