10 Gallon Tank Peaceful Betta Turned Aggressive!

WhimsyDragon

Hello, everyone.

I joined this forum very recently and am still getting the hang of things. I am also rather new to fishkeeping, so please let me learn from your experiences!

I have a 10-gallon community tank with 1 betta, 2 mystery snails, 3 amano shrimp, and 7 ember tetras. My betta used to be rather peaceful with his tankmates. Every now and then, he'd get a wild hair and chase a tetra or two, bu then he'd settle down and go back to drifting around. About a week ago, he was showing indicators of fin rot, so I put him in a 1.5 gallon quarantine tank with a teaspoon of aquarium salt to help with the fin rot. It seemed to work great. I kept doing water changes, he was eating, and his fin is growing back. I read you aren't supposed to leave a betta in that saltwater bath for too long, so I decided to put him back in the community tank today (after a week).

He's been flaring like crazy (even at the snails) and chasing the tetras and shrimp all over the tank. Should I be worried? I'm planning on keeping a close eye on them for the next week or so to make sure he doesn't stress the others too much, but when should I consider moving him to his own tank? Like I said before, he was peaceful with them before his quarantine and he hasn't had even 24 hours to adjust yet. I just wanted to get your thoughts on it before I start to develop and ulcer from worrying. Thanks in advance for your advise!

He may have enjoyed his solitude! May just be because tankmates are a new thing again. Keep an eye out. Personally i would purchase another tank just in case though, if you don't already have one. Might need a quick back up plan.

Thanks! I figured it might be that. I enjoy my solitude, too! XD I don't know how long bettas retain memories, but I'm hoping he just needs to settle a bit. If possible, I would like to make it work in the community tank, because my space is a bit limited. However, I will definitely make sure I have the equipment necessary to move him if need be. Thank you for your response!

How long was he in the other tank before treating him for fin rot? Maybe he felt under the weather and now he’s healthy and feisty.

He's been in that tank since December. He does have some curling in his tail which I thought was cute when I got him (I'm a newbie) and then upon reading about it, found it can be a sign of poor health. But I will certainly take your response under consideration! If you can think of anything else, I'm all ears!
