Passing up dream fish.

Well I went to the LFS and saw a dream fish. They had at least 4 of them.

Sadly I had to be responsible and not buy them. Even once I get Nibbles final tank done it will not be big enough for those (even if it was they would eat Nibbles). I looked at their temp range and found it not compatible with a MN koi pond.. not to mention that when full grown they will happily eat full grown koi.

So I kept checking to see what else was new.

And other fish I want, that will grow to big. So time to be responsible again.

Dream fish and I didn't buy them. Sometimes being responsible and not having a swimming pool for fish is its own kind of torture.

So what dream fish have you had to pass up?

So far, I've very responsibly resisted snakeheads. They're very illegal to keep here, (for very good reason) but I love them so much and with effort, they can be collected from nearby waters where they've become invasive. but... it's a crime.

I killed a red as a kid because the mall pet shop said it would dwarf to live in my 15 gal. They were not banned back then.

I have always wanted an arrowana and Oscar tank. Unfortunately I just don't have the space to keep a large enough tank for them.

I’ve never really been interested in larger fish but I’ve had to pass up some wild bettas that I really wanted because of my local water parameters

Yes, that is why I had to do so much resrarch on wild bettas. I have harder water- not quite hard enough for cichlids without crushed coral but perfect for live bearers. Not great for most bettas though. I finally took the plunge with a pair of mahachaiensis. They arrive tomorrow. Hope they are ok with hard water and a pH in the high sevens to about eight!

Let me know how it goes! I have water around 8.2 for pH and it’s pretty hard. Would love to get wild bettas if I can!

I've always wanted a black diamond cichlid Paratilapia polleni. I haven't seen one locally and unfortunately I don't have any new Aquarium space.

Every time I see festivums and severums I want them. Not suitable for my current setup though.

I've passed them up many times, mostly for financial reasons. Apparently I'm not attracted to inexpensive fish!

What fish store, assuming you are in Minnesota based on your Koi Pond? My usual is Forest Lake Pets but I am always looking for others to peruse.

Give it a few years and it may be just the right temps.

Tamed Waters in St Paul. It is a "check in every week" store if you like the exotic. They are open Thu-Sun. The line before opening on Thu can be pretty long. They also do heavy business in bettas if you are into that, though for the best bettas be in the line on Thu, they sell out fast. He is getting better at weekly Facebook/youtube stock updates.

I like the Forest Lake place especially for their fish rescue, where else can you see stingrays as big as table cloths? Other than that it is a long drive and their stock seems very nice but a little common. It has been a few years since I was last there.

I hope to do the koi pond next year and fill most of my backyard with it (less mowing + more fish). I want a 9 foot deep well to make sure Koi and high fins are happy over the winter. So it will be tiered 3ft-6ft-9ft. All the filtration and pumps will go in my garage.
I'd also add crime loaches (weather) but those are a crime.
