Hello people,

Right I have an issue where I have added gravel I did clean it before adding to my tank but sadly might not have done it as good as I thought so every time I clean my tank ie water changes it clouds my tank with what I believe would be the gravel particles like dust sadly when I change my filters it creates this almighty particle bloom now in a few hours it dose settle ie the filter sucks it up but still remains slight in my tank any way I can help remove this ? Fast any help would be great thanks

Had the same problem with my lovely fine substrate. Solution= wash the out of it. I ended up putting it all in an esky (bucket will do) filled it with water and shoveled my hands through for a while till the water was all muddy. Emptied the water then filled again with fresh water and repeated process. I did this about TEN times and was still getting muddy but had had enough so thought id use it then anyway. It took about 2 days till the fish tank was no longer cloudy(crystal clear) and if I stir the substrate up too much it gets cloudy again. So when adding more water now I am very careful, I have a container that I fully submerge in the tank before emptying the water so as not to blow substrate everywhere.

See I'm sure this will go but I did kinda come up with an idea but not yet tested what I was going to do was using my gravel cleaner yes this dose tank out some of the dust but don't want the water all to go of course but I was thinking I have like a filter sock and if I was to use that on the end that will catch some of the dirt dust in the filter sock also letting the water back in the tank will let you know how I get on prob a silly but easy way but yet to test and try lol

If it's cloudy due to the substrate then you'll just have to wait it out and let it settle.

If it's cloudy due to a bacterial bloom, again you'll have to wait it out and allow it to go away on it's own. Water changes only exacerbate bacterial blooms and will not help it to go away. The only danger during a bacterial bloom is to the fish. During a bacterial bloom the oxygen level gets dangerously low, so on top of the surface agitation your filter already provides you'll want to add an air stone or a bubble wand.

Hi so recently my water has had floating particles, im not worrying too much as ina few days im upgrading to a bigger tank new gravel too! With an external filter rather than internal just wondering what causes it? Is it likely to be build up of muck in thw gravel? I thought it might be the two live plants dying so i removed them.didn't help that much..just wanna avoid this is the new tank i heard seachem clarity is good? Could it be one of the filters needs a good clean!? I have three going but do clean them regular not at the same time...tanks 135 litres and cycled. 0 ammonia 0 nitrite and 10/20 nitrate.

The floating particles of bio gunk likely won't adversely impact the water parameters. When the particles settle to the substrate, the BB quickly breaks it down.
A quality HOB filter or canister should solve the problem.

Something to add and quickly remove that is filter floss. If you have a powerhead just add filter floss to a water bottle with holes in it and filter floss inside. It will quickly remove the stuff. I use a odyssea 250 for problems like that

Congrats on your tank upgrade! What size are you getting?

More than likely if you add some filter floss to the filter and/or use a DIY powerhead with a bottle full of floss like 86 ssinit suggested, your water clarity will get to where you want it.

After you set up your new tank and filtration and you still cant get the water clarity you're looking for, consider trying a bottle of "Acurel F" water clarifier.

If you cant find Acurel "F" and their "E" version for ponds is available, it is the exact same formula. It's just marketed different and usually found in the larger 100ml-1000liter bottles. I use the "E" for ponds in my tanks because it's slightly cheaper versus same size bottle of "F" clarifier.

I tried it for the first time a year or two ago and have been using it since. I might add some to a tank once a month if the tank's water looks a little dirty after doing a thorough substrate cleaning and glass wipe down. After the cleaning and WC, I'll add the Acurel water clarifier around half the recommended dose.

For example, our 75g will get 3-4mL and our 55g and 65g tanks get 3mL. I've found a plastic syringe from a pharmacy is the easiest and most accurate way to measure it out.

I originally used the full dose recommendations, which is 1mL per 10g water, but I found its still very effect at 50%-75% strength in my experience.

I've never had any adverse reaction with the fish when using Acurel either, and I have community fish, African and CA/SA cichlids.

The water will turn slightly hazy for 10-20 minutes though, but will turn super clear afterwards.

I am definitely not a fan of adding chemicals and products to "fix" something in our tanks, but the Acurel is one of only 3 products I usee to add to our tanks. The other 2 are my dechlorinator and liquid plant fertilizer.
