Parrot Cichlids and Cory Cats

Can 2 Parrot Cichlids live with 8 Cory Cats in a 55 gallon tank? The tank I am planning to have will be heavily planted and will have many hiding spots and caves. I'm afraid that once the cichlids get large, they will eat the corys and or eat their food before it falls to the bottom, starving the corys. I've done some research and I've had mixed results. Some people say that the cichlids attack the corys while others say they get along fine together. So, can this tank work?

I'm going to say yes....but I'm no cichlid expert so maybe wait until they chime in.

I say yes because with the plants and the size the corys should be able to hide if they become aggressive. and corys are great scavengers so any unseen food are the food they spit back out wil be eaten

I believe Aquarist keeps Emerald Cories in his 265g Tank with quite a few Parrots. He could probably lend some good advice. Something to consider with Parrots and plants though is they like to re-arrange their surroundings at times, and may tear up or uproot plants. You might try floating plants, or maybe securing them in pots somehow. Just something else to consider.

Hello and Welcome to Fish Lore!

I have never had an issue keeping Bloody Parrots and Emerald Cory Cats together in the same aquarium. Due to the deformity of the Bloody Parrots mouth. I purchased all of my fish as juveniles. My stocking list is in my signature below.

One thing to remember is if 1 fish is small enough to fit into another fishes mouth, it may well be breakfast.

Plants with Bloody Parrots can be hit or miss. Mine can rip a leaf of Romaine Lettuce to shreds when they want. I've also tried plants and as mentioned by others, they do like to rearrange their home at times. Because I have Silver Dollars, I do not currently have my aquarium planted.

I hope you enjoy the forum.

I've got a Blood Parrot in a 55 with 6 cory cats. The BP doesn't really pay much attention to the cat's at all. I suggest adding the cats to the tank first though. When I added my last two cats, my Blood Parrot was in fact interested in chasing them down to find out what they were but I fed her right after and she has since left them alone.
