Parasites in Frozen Foods

I was feeding my betta frozen bloodworms, and my goldfish was staring at me, looking really cute. So I caved and gave him 1 large bloodworm. I've never seen him eat anything that fast, so I'd like to give him a bloodworm or two when I give my betta bloodworms once a week. Buuuut... I've heard that frozen foods can contain parasites sometimes. Is it true that bloodworms can be grown in sewage? I use the San Francisco Bay Brand bloodworms, because they're hopefully higher quality and therefore cleaner.

I've never given my goldfish frozen food for fear of parasites, but now I've gone and opened Pandora's Box. How likely is it for parasites to be in frozen food? I mostly concerned about ich and anchorworm.

I really don't want to break my perfect zero ich ever streak.
I'm pretty sure he'll be fine, but I'm a nervous wreck, so I have to fret about something.

Its highly doubtful. I only know of one organism that can come back to life after being frozen and it's that frog everyone knows about, that I can't remember the name of. Ich is present inside most fish, it'll present under stress. So long as your tank stays happy and healthy, your fish shouldnt be affected by it.

I really doubt it. Live bloodworms, possibly. I know when we get ours in, sometimes there are leeches also present in the batch. The fish will eat the leech too, but.....still, that happens. So live bloodworms I would say yes, there is a POSSIBILITY of transferring some kind of yucky, but frozen foods should be safe I would assume, even if the frozen did have parasites, they wouldn't be live after being frozen.

I think you will find that all frozen fish food is gamma irradiated thus free of any nasties & lurgies

The packet will confirm this or the company who made it will either via their website or by contacting them via customer services usually details of which are on the packet

Anything multicellular will die during the freezing process.

If a frozen food had parasites word would spread like wild fire! Not to say it’s 100% safe but it’s more of a 98%, I’ve been feeding frozen foods for over a year and I’ve never had any issues, I even have some fish that eat strictly frozen foods. I wouldn’t worry

What about water bears? They can survive the cold vacuum of spaaaaace!

These posts really do make me feel much better. Thanks!

I know HikarI does this, but nowhere on the SFB bloodworms package or website does it mention irradiation. I’ll see about their customer services. A phone call would be a significant obstacle.

Hahaha, to think my fish could catch the dreaded lurgy.

Feeding a high protein food to Goldfish is contra-indicated anyway. Unless I'm mistaken, it can cause bloat or other digestive problems.

I don't know about blood worms but earth worms are great for larger goldfish.
