245E99A2-CAD5-4D8D-B5CF-D0075901CB48.jpeg I am not sure what is going on with my platy fishes . We have them for a year now and they start dying one by one . I noticed the white patched among them and later on turn into cottony growth . Could it be a fungus infection. Is it cOntagious and deathly ? How should it treated them ? Should I separated them or should I try to medicated the whole tank ? I am afraid that the fungus is already in the water . However it only affected the painted platt now . I have four diamond tetras , two painted Platies , one Nicky mouse platies , one female guppies and two baby guppies . Please help me save my tank. Tank is fully cycle no ammonia , nutrite and nitrate

It looks like columnaris. You can treat it with Kanaplex and Nitrofurazone used together. Nitrofurazone is found in Jungle Fungus Clear Fizz tabs (JFC) or in API Furan-2

You will use the both together and treat the entire tank. It is contagious, so everyone needs to be treated. You need the meds in the tank for 7-10 days. This will be 2 full rounds of meds. So follow the instructions on the packaging the best you can.

Good luck.

Kanamycin and Furan are not my go to meds, but I won't knock the advice allie gave you, only that it didnt work for me for columnaris.
Kanamycin is narrow in spectrum, and since most bacterial infections present the same symptoms, its hit or miss what bacteria your actually using. I would say use something like Maracyn1/2 combo if the fish are valuable and you can salvage the bio filter in a bucket during treatment.
My go to has always been oxytetracycline. You have to use the flake.
You could also use triple sulfa, or maracyn 2 (maracyn 2 works really well)

Sulfas bacteria cannot build resistance, but are slow acting
Tetracyclines are broad spectrum and very effective, but bacteria can build resistance fast
Kanamycin is good for internal gram - infections, but narrow spectrum, and can cause kidney damage with overuse

Thank you very much AllieSten for the fast response. I will go ahead and try to order the medications from Amazon as soon as possible. I went to many local pet stores and I am surprise they do not have those medication on the shelves. I will certainly made sure I follow the instructions well. Happy new years to you

Whitewolf thank you very much for the prompt response., I just checked my medications that I have on hand for emergency. I do have API general cure, Tripple Sulfa, and three boxes of T.C. Tetracycline , I even have one box E.M. Erythromycin. My questions to you is do I have to remove the carbon filters? Medication won't work at all if the carbon filters are not remove? Or does the medication still work but not as effective. By the way triple sulfa does turn the water yellow right? Are there any other mediation that does not change the color of the water. If not I will just stick with the medications that everybody suggested. Happy new year to you

Carbon absorbs all medications, so it isn’t that it makes it ineffective, it completely gets rid of it. So yes you must remove the carbon. If you are using filter cartridges, just make a slit in the cartridge and dump the carbon out. Then put the cartridge back in your tank. Carbon is optional in your tank.

I have learned some tricks along the way. Lots and lots of failures for sure. First 6 months I used cartridges and hated them. So now I use reuseable biomedia. No need to replace anything. Just rinse in dechlorinated water once a month or so. It will last for years, instead of weeks. If you want a link to a couple videos on optimizing your filter and your media let me know. I have a couple of favorites I like to share. YouTube & Fishlore has taught me sooooo much lol
