Painted Glass Fish

I was at my lfs last weekend and they had painted glass fish in again.  I asked them why they sold them since they are injected with die right??  Well the guy told me they put them in a bath of special water that takes of their protective slime coat then paint the stripe on them then put them in another special bath that puts the slime coat back on.  He says this doesn't harm them at all.  I have never heard of this method before.  I think it's still harmful to the fish what do you think.

Re: Painted Galss Fish

It's supposed to be very painful to the fish, and probably shortens their lifespan. All you can do is not buy the fish, and hope others will follow. You can also spread the word to any of your friends who have or want tanks.

Yes but I thought they injected them with paint not actually paint them.

ATMmachine, you really should read this:

They use various dyeing techniques - and believe me, all are painful, all are.

Re: Painted Galss Fish

That is so inhumane!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This makes me so mad, can you imagine what a ruckus it would create if they did that to cats or dogs? But no, no one cares about the fish. What kind of selfish, greedy, uncaring person could do that to any aminal??????????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! >
Oh yeah, they sell those at Wal**** too. >

Re: Painted Galss Fish

oh my gosh he says it doesn't hurt them?!?!?
I think somebody should dunk him in a chemical that destroys his outer layer of skin, the paint him with a harmful chemical!!!!

Re: Painted Galss Fish

Well I have just become the proud owner of 3 glassfish (UNPAINTED I hasten to add) - they're quite shy at the moment and my tank is so big I don't see much of them but they're great to watch and real little characters
I spoke to the man at the fish store and he was really antI painting them and he says they check out all the places that they buy the fish from to make sure they're healthy and "fish friendly" ;D He said he even has to make sure people who buy bettas have a tank bigger than 8 litres! What a good store policy huh?? ;D

Re: Painted Galss Fish

That's cool, by any chance do you have some pictures of them that would be cool.

And yes this guy was like don't worry it doesn't hurt them at all, and then to really make me mad when I asked them why they have 2 6" silver arowanas and what they were going to do with them if they didn't sell them he said o we usually sell them and he obviously is a jack@#$ because I usually come in when they get new shipments in and they have NEVER had silver arowanas in. I asked him if he knew how big they got and he was like yes I know how large they get and I asked him if he thinks people really are going to have the right tank sizes and he was just like o well I don't care. I hate that store now.

Re: Painted Galss Fish

Miss Mouse, yes, you have a very good LFS. You should be very happy about that. Most stores don't even care, which is terrible. Anyway, what kind of glassfish do you have? (I love glass fish!) Chanda Rangas or Glass Catfish? Glass Cats are really cute but they're also very shy and very delicate, and therefore need great care and a sense of security. I have read they'll hide and eventually fade away if not confident in their surroundings. Also read they need to be kept in groups.

Re: Painted Galss Fish

Hey guys, yeah I've realised they're EXTREMELY shy hence no photos :-[ Its a big tank and there are a lot of places to hide - I've only seen 2 of them in the last 48 hours so worrying a little about the 3rd one. I am tempted to go back and buy some more to have a shoal of them - especially if that's gonna make them more confident. The platys that they're with are a little over powering - they're just mad attention seeking little beasts ;D

Oh, Glass Cats, those are awesome. you should definitely get some more, they are very timid and need a nice shoal to make them feel secure.

Re: Painted Galss Fish

I will I have seen all 3 again so that's a releif although I am not sure if they're eating... the naughty little platys gobble EVERYTHING I put in there and the glass cats are too scared to come up and eat. Does anyone know how to get the food to sink down a little? (I have tried dunking it under) Do you think it might be worth putting the platys in another tank? I'm getting a little annoyed with their bad behaviour and atrocious manners >

Re: Painted Galss Fish

Sorry, but making food sink won't get it past the Platys. I am having the same problem with my Platys eating the Otos' algae wafers and veggies right off teh bottom, so I'm moving the Otos to a new tank asap. : But if you still want to try, swishing flakes around in a bit of water will make them sink. You could try feeding your Platys floating stuff on one side of the tank and dumping in sinking stuff on the other... Let us know how it goes. (those Platys... : > ;D)

Re: Painted Galss Fish

Yeah they're naughty little so and so's! Luckily they don't eat the algae wafers but the glass cats are mid feeders and don't seem to like flakes - only bloodworms and daphnia. I'm going to try and put some live daphnia in and see if they eat them. Otherwise I will just put platys in a seperator when it comes to feeding time. Could be easier said than done but they're dumb enough to all rush to the food in one end of the tank so shouldn't be too hard heehee

Re: Painted Galss Fish

Yes those Platys are naughty little fish. ... but you gotta love em How do you get your Platys to not eat algae wafers?? heh heh you may think they're dumb to rush to the food...personally I think they're way too smart and figured out how to hog all the food... > ;D :
let us know how it works.

Re: Painted Galss Fish

I got 3 more glass cats today so they should be more confident AND I worked out how to feed them last night! I was walking past the tank in the dark and noticed they were all at the top so I put some food in and they munched away happily without the snoring platys bothering them! Sneaky ;D
