Overkill?

Well, you can see what my setup is in my signature, but I currently have a TopFin(boo!) 60 HOB and an AquaClear 200(? the 20 gal one) as my only filtration, aside from quite a few plants.

Someone in my area is selling a Fluval 404 canister filter for $40, and I was wondering if this would be too much, or if there is such a thing, for my 55 gal tank.

I would really like to go the canister route, as far as I have read it is much better filtration, and simpler maintenance, but I'm not in a position to spend $120 on a quality filter, and am not going to buy a lesser piece of equipment.

Anyway, any advice is very appreciated! Thanks very much.

 

As long as it doesn't create too much current, there is no such thing as too much filtration. If it works, I'd say go for it.

 

Like Sirdarksol (creative name by the way!) he said "You can never have to much filtration" or something like that... Some current can be good for certain types of fish, but you don't want no "White Water Rafting" current though, unless you have trout as fish...

 

Cool...but I am a bit worried, because it pumps out 340 GPH....which might be a bit strong for a 55 gal. It says its for <100 gal tanks, but I'll look into it.

Would it be a problem that it has been used for saltwater? I mean, its going to have to be thoroughly cleaned anyway.

 

i'd personally say it's fine, as long as the current isn't too strong, but there are ways around that too.

as far as being used for saltwater, as long as you get all the previous stuff off, it's fine

 

The comments like "Good for a 100 gallon tank" etc ... are ONLY in terms of BIOLOGICAL filtration, not mechanical filtration. You need to know how many GALLONS PER HOUR (GPH) each of your filters pumps. It says on the filter's box how many GPH each filter has. If you don't have the boxes anymore, you should be able to find out on the Internet about the GPH of your filters.

So, how many filters do you have right now over your 55 gallon tank, and how many GPH does each one of them pump?

 

u can never have a strong enough filter and as sirdarksol said as long as it does make a too strong current its good

I picked out a filter for my new 30 gall that is 260 litres to 570 litres so yer
