Overhang On 29 Gallon Stand

We have a spot that I'd like to put a 29-gallon Imagitarium metal tank stand to match the stand for our 55 gallon tank. But I've seen an all-glass ADA aquarium on sale that looks good. It measures 29”L X 17”W X 17.5”H, so the stand width is ok but the tank would overhang front and back by about 2.5". I've seen some people recommend using plywood cut to the base size of the tank to support the overhang. But I was wondering if using thick plexiglass or regular glass cut to size would work instead? If so, what thickness glass would be required?

I don't know about glass, maybe if it was super thick but I doubt it. Definitely not plywood, it will flex and bend over time. I recommend a tank and stand that fit. In my experience stand modifications don't often end well.

Yeah it's not ideal but there are quite a few examples of people putting 3/4" or 1" plywood below their tanks to support overhangs and the general consensus seems to be it is ok. As far as glass goes I was looking around a little more and found this glass load calculator: Glass Weight Load Calculator | Dulles Glass and Mirror. It says that a 29x17 piece of tempered glass that is 1/4" thick can support 1000 pounds, with 1 foot between supports. Maybe I'll check with a glass company to see what they think.

Are we talking 2.5 inches total difference? What is the overhang on each side? If it's 1.25 then it is probably doable with the right material. But if it's 2.5 on each side, that's too much in my opinion. That said, I still wouldn't say it's the best solution to the problem.

The difference is 4.5" inches in total, so 2.25" overhang per side. Thanks for the feedback.
