Overfed Male Or Pregnant Female?

Jadeykinz

HI again all,
I've looked up how to sex guppies and it seems to me this guppy is male. Although he looks quite bloated like a pregnant female would. Could someone in the know take a look at the picture for me please. If it is a pregnant female what are signs of birthing? If a fat male (maybe constitpated?) do I fast for a day or two?
Many thanks

Thanks for your reply. Yeah I did think it was a male, any ideas on what to do? The others are all good sizes (not bloated etc) maybe he's just a pig when it comes to feeding time

Seems to be a female that's pregnant. The analfin looks like its just not fully extended.

This isn't necessarily an overfed male. What this is called is a "chesty" fish. What happens is at the farms where they are bred is that they feed the fish 3-5 times a day and the fish eat as much as they can. This results in the fish having a large chest, giving it the name of "chesty" if the fish are continuously fed 3-5 times a day they will literally explode. No joke. If you feed him 1-2 times a day he will be fine.

Its not a male. You can tell by the extravagant colours on it and the shape of the analfin. You can see almost a step like pattern forming which is where the gonopodium is beginning.

with a better pic towards the rear will definitely verify the gender by if it has a gravid spot or not...neither pic has a clear shot of that

Its NOT a female. You can see the gonopodium near his anal vent. If it were a female you would be able to see here gravid spot behind her analfin and she would be less square and more round. Please believe me I have a lot of experience with livebearers

I'll try and get a behind pic tomorrow. He/she is one of the only ones that actually stays still long enough for me to picture. I don't recall seeing a gravid spot on the fish though. Would go and look but I've just got myself into bed haha

Okay thank you, I'm very new to this and trusting google on a lot of things! If it's an overfed male do I just continue to feed as I am? He's the only one that's like it. Or maybe it's like you said with the "chesty" thing

I can almost guarantee you that its a male. If it had a Gravid spot and was pregnant you would be able to see it. Also he has a gonopodium. You can see in the first picture. Also if it were a female the colours would be nowhere near as good as they are. A female with colours like that are always imported and very expensive.

Its most likely the chesty thing. It can't be reversed but as long as you feed 1-2 times a day he will be fine.

My son feeds them a small amount of flakes in the morning and I feed even less once in the evening. Same as our betta

Perfect. Make sure they only get as much food as they can eat in 2-5 minutes

appears to be a male to me from my little bit of pregnant guppy knowledge....just in front of those analfins in the second pic on a female will usually have a pretty dark spot ( the gravid spot )

Yeah, after seeing this I can confirm that it is 100% a male guppy
