Over powered filter

Ok, so it seems that the aqueon quiet flow 30 that I bought is ov flowered for my 29 gallon bow front

I have in past used a water bottle to baffle flow a bit, but that was only a ten g unit and this one is rated for 45g

Any suggestions? I know there have been threads in the past, and would love to hear back from people who have handled this minor setback

Here are a couple of pics of the filter effects on the tank, after 24 hours

ammonia issue fixed
water crystal clear(that took only 20 minutes)
sand crater at bottom of the tank was noticed this morning

I'm running both the new and old filter side by side for now...the result being tons of flow, and fish being pushed to the bottom at the aqueon side of the tank. I think I'll slow the aqua clear to a trickle, I'm not sure if they can get to the top

So you have both an Aqueon 30 and an Aquaclear 30 on this tank? The two combined should be producing just the right amount of filtration for this tank size. Removing one leaves you underfiltered but you can always baffle the flow on the outtakes and/or put a prefilter sponge over the intakes. And switching the AC flow knob to the lowest setting should help as well.

I don't know how full your tank is with water but you could try filling it more? I have an aqua clear 70 and an aqueon qf 30 on my 29 gallon with sand and I don't have any problems with the sand or fish getting blown around. I fill it about a centimeter from the top of the tank. I have used DIY baffles before too for my betta tanks. Also, at least for the sand, maybe put a large-ish stone or piece of wood where your crater in the sand is. Your tank is pretty

The water is a little low...about an inch from the top because the cats drink from it and it's just about water change time. Normally, water change day is Saturday but I'm busy so I'll be doing t tomorrow as the levels are good
Thanks for the compliment, it's coming together slowly
Perhaps it will help is I swap them, putting thenew one on the left where I have the big rock and more pebbles

The unit is rated for 45 gallons, so I thought it would be great for this tank. I'm a fan of over-filtration, and wanted to continue to run the aqua clear so that it's ready when I buy my next fish. Then I can throw it on the Q/T a couple of days before hand and not have to worry about leaving the main tank without enough filtration while I quarantine

Give it time. All filters appear overpowered at first and that's because we're used to seeing them clogged with waste or dead plants, running %75 or less from full power. In a month or two you'll be wishing it had more flow.

Fish that hail from fast moving rivers will probably enjoy the current, and when they need a break they're good at finding the slow-moving spots in the tank and resting of their on accord.

Yes, the minnows love it, they have been playing in the current

The neons not so much....they went and hung out in the hornwort, which is part of the reason for swapping the two sides. Minnows favour the rocky side and current, whilst the neons like to chill to the right in the dense(ish) plant life
