ok, so as some of you may know. i have my 55gal african mbuna tank. there is a 5in featherfin cat and a 3 in chinese algae eater in there. i have lots of live plants too. an amazon sword, argentine sword, java moss and westeria. my plants have recently gotten a brown film over them. diatoms maybe?? if so, what do i do to get rid of them. i like otos but i don't think my featherfin would lol. jw what i could do. i wipe the leaves off and its back within half an hr. :(

no ottos they would be a snack.

is the tank new? this stuff usually just comes for a short time in new tanks.

if its not new what kind lights and how long are you leaving them on for?

  3. JDcichlidloverWell Known MemberMember

no, not new. its been set up for over 6 mo now. i just moved it to a new house but i took 20 gal with me and all of my filters were stored in the water so i didn't need to recycle the tank. thanks about the otos :D i just read their profile and i was thinking "oops" lol.
actually the brown algae just has never gone away. its been in my tank and filter for a long time... :( its just been really noticable lately. and the weird thing is that its not on my slate! just my plants and filters
my light is one of the florasun lights from petco. its on my profile but i don't remember the stats. i turn it on when i get up, around 4 am, and they're off around 7pm. my cae is very fat so im thinking he might be eating some of it.

your lights are on to long. for live plants they only need lights to be on for 6 hours. i run mine for 8 hours but if you run them much longer you will end up with algae. i would get a light timer and lower the time to no more then 9 hours. see if that helps.

also is the natural light directly on the tank? is it right in front of a window? that could also be a problem but only if the light is directly hitting the tank.

thanks :) definatly worth a shot. i will give it a try.
no the tank is away from windows, the windows nearby have curtains that are usually pulled because its in the living room so we're always watching movies or playing ps3 in there too.

Your statistics say you have a Florasun 17w 5000K? Too low of lighting is a cause also. You said its always been around. Increasing light intensity usually helps to make it go away.

thanks for the help :) i have been needing a new hood and lights.:whistling: i'm just new to the plant keeping bit so i'm not sure exactly on lighting, ferts and such. I've lowered my light time to 5 hrs right now and i can't see as much. my plants don't like it very much though. I'll upgrade the light next paycheck.
one more question... my well water has A LOT of iron in it. I use prime water conditioner but i'm worried about what iron can do. I can't seem to find any info on it... any ideas? my fish are thriving and the plants are ok. jw. we just moved them to this house christmas eve.

Check out this light  . It is a lot cheaper than what you will pay in a store and has a built-in timer.

wow oscarbud that is awesome :D but im not running a sw tank lol. and its african cichlids. im not even sure if all the plants will stay. the swords are doing well. and of course the java moss... I probably can't convince my hubby to let me have that light :( i like the plants. and i do need a better light. but itll just have to be a new bulb that has more intensity.

Maybe I gave you the link for the wrong light. It is for a FW planted tank. It has 4 - 6700K bulbs. When I got mine, I bought the one with the 10000k bulbs, which isn't right for a FW planted tank and have to change the bulbs out, but I love the unit itself.

That fixture is very high light. You could remove all the bulbs but one. But even then u might end up needing co2 to keep algae at bay.

I'm sorry if I sound dumb, but I can't understand that chart. I've never really messed with the lights before. My hood takes an 18in bulb. the tank is 24 in high and the hood sits right on top of the lid. what wattage should I get?
I know I need to get new hoods. theres an awesome story behind the tank :)
I walked into a resale store to find a desk and came out with a $10 55 gal tank, stand, lid and hood :D presto! very first fishy tank.
thats it... I'll get new hoods on monday when i go to work. but I'll still need bulbs. whats the wattage I should be looking for? the fish specialist at work doesn't care for plants. he has 7 tanks and not a single live plant... he has coral though.

are you sure its a 24in tall tank? standard 55g are only 21in high.

i see you have a blood parrot with SA cichids. im no cichlid expert but i dont thing your suppose to mix them. blood parrots cant defend themselves due to there mouths not being able to close. you might want to look into this more as im not 100%.

i know... I saved him from a ten gallon. I've been trying to find him a home. as of right now he has his own cave and defends himself ok. he has a few rips in his tail but not too bad. i thought it would be easier to find him a home... i had to save him though, I hate to see fish stunted for the shear ignorance of people. my featherfin (also a rescue) is stunted a bit :( the rest of the cichlids are african. so my featherfin fits right in but the bp...
it might be 21. I don't have a tape measure here.

ok well if the aggression gets to bad for him im sure a pet store would take him for free. i know i have a couple that would.

you said your bulb is 18in? isnt your tank 48in long? do you have two fixtures? are the new fixtures going to be 2 24in or 1 48in light?

here this fixture would be a ok low light fixture.

i would honestly get this one and only run one bulb but either will work fine...
  17. JDcichlidloverWell Known MemberMember

the lid is set up for two hoods. one big hood wouldn't sit right on it. well. i work at a petco, but if he doesn't get adopted out quickly then I would worry he'd go to a bad home on the weekend. during the week good people work at my store. on the weekends they don't care. all the stupid college kids who know nothing about fish work the weekends... i don't want him going to another tiny tank.

man that odessea looks nice :) and it clamps on? maybe that will work :D thanks for that link. too bad they're out of stock :(
  18. bankruptjojoFishlore VIPMember

I'm pretty sure it should come back in stock soon. I use glass tops and one big fixture on my 33g long, here is a pick. I'm using a zoomed fixture I got at Petco in this pic.
