Hey, sorry it took so long to chime in here.. My otos' did the same tail wrap thing. Then they'd lay a few eggs and then move onto another leaf and repeat the process. But something, I'm guessing my angels, came along and ate all the eggs...

I've removed all other fish from that tank, so it's just them. Am hoping they'll play happy families and that some of the fry survive.

WOW, that is so awesome your Otos spawned! Wish mine would do it, but slI'm chance since they're different species of Oto. :

Still not getting algae? Just leave your fluorescent light on them for 14 or even 16 hours a day. If that won't get you algae I don't know what will. My fluorescent lights are on 10 hours a day and I still am infested with algae! How about if we trade tanks?!

If you want to put the tank in sunlight to try and get algae, don't worry about overheating unless it starts getting well above 80. A lot of people keep Otos with their Bettas at 80 degrees, and they don't seem to mind the high temps.

Thanks, 0morrokh! Actually, we came back from 1 week of holiday and we could spot 4 fry. ;D They are 9 days old today, so I am really hoping that they won't starve and are somehow finding something to eat.

2 of them actually look like mini-otos already, sooooo cute. I just can't believe our luck. I took a picture but I can't post it right now (am not at home). For some reason, they're really tiny but that one picture came out really sharp.

As I am not the most practical of people, and my algae farm was very badly designed. Result, goo came in from the outside (like floating dead spiders), the fake rock was half out of the water, and the rest was not exposed to sunlight. This needs the engineer's touch, I'll have to ask my man to get involved!

I hope he's an engineer then.. I wouldn't make a very good one.

He's an engineer. Unfortunately, he's a product design engineer, so that means he'll concentrate on my algae farm looking pretty! :;qu Kidding. He's great with the practical stuff. He never ceases to amaze me with his bright ideas. A right Handy Andy!

OK, both adults and 4 fry seem are all alive. The mother, however, is getting pale. She's laid eggs (again!) and appears to be pregnant (again!). I think there's either:

1/ a pheromone problem (too concentrated?). I do 50% water change at least once weekly. The're in this tiny tank (just under 5G I think) with just 2 otos and their fry.
2/ maybe my water change technique triggers mating in them? I use a watering can to pour water back in and I wonder if that somehow triggers a mating response.

I don't want her to die of exhaustion.

Any help appreciated.

OK, anybody who's following this subject (otos breeding). Here's a small article on them that might be of interest. Doesn't answer my last question, though, so that one's still up for grabs!

I think I'm blind I can't see the link for the article
Most catfish(Corys, otos, some plecos) like fish spawn in the spring as the spring rains wash more food into the water and raise the water levels. This is how I've gotten corys and bristlenose to breed at will. Maybe the way your putting the water back in simulates a rain for them.
I would say move them to a bigger tank and let them have at it. Just make sure their eating well and their water is as clean as possible. If you get really concerned you could separate the male and female for a week or so BUT.. if she feels its time to spawn she will lay eggs whether he's in there or not, they just won't be fertilized.

No, you're not blind, I'm fingerless!!! Here's the link: .. It doesn't dwell on breeding or anything, but it's a good, well-rounded link on otos.

Thanks, Carol. Very good advice. If I feel she's really getting exhausted, I'll move the adults to a larger tank. All my other tanks are riddled with algae! It's just that I know they don't appreciate being moved.

I'll perhaps also pour the water in via reverse syphon rather than the rain effect. Shame, that's more finicky.

I know you have checked at otocinclus also. Are you keeping records of spawnings?

Oh absolutely: am the queen of logging fish-facts. I have a 70 page-long aquarium diary in MS Word!!!

I love otocynclus.com. I've contacted that guy, by the way. I still need to ask him pictures.

Yes I have a large notebook with individual 3 ring notebooks for each breeding species with everything I did or noticed written in for them> I think better with pen and paper than with the computer(as I'm sure has been noticed with some of my posts )

I can imagine that's also a very satisfying feeling. That's why the internet will never beat books in my eyes. You have that tangible feeling. But I do find it really handy that you fan do a search for any piece of text in the document and find it immediately. Oh, and there is also copy/pasting!

that's a good reason.. but I really do like open source apps like firefox, thunderbird and openoffice. avg virus scanner is nice free software for PCs too. i'd just rather use non-microsoft products.
