I have 4 Oto’s in my 46 gallon. I’ve had them over a month now and they’ve been doing great and been very active. The last couple days I’ve noticed two of them with white patches on the top of their head and sides of body. Today, the one in the picture I’ve attached started flipping around and died. I’m worried the second one will follow.

Does anyone know what this is? Water parameters are stable. I do have a bit of a brown algae problem right now.

The picture I’ve attached make the top look worse than it is, he has a small white patch on top of his head and is not completely white like the picture makes it look.

I just had the same thing happen about a month ago with one of my otos! I’m interested to hear if others know what it is. I saw the white and instantly thought “ick!” but it looked like yours-patches of white, almost like flakes, scales, loose skin kind of thing.
I’m sorry for your loss! The good news in my case at least, was that no one else in the tank had any complications or died (just the oto with the white patches).

Glad to hear I’m not the only one, and that it was isolated in your case. I’m hoping someone else has had experience with this so I can avoid it again.

Possibly fungal, or maybe columnaris? I sure hope not columnaris

Use your camera to zoom in as much as possible. Could be baby ramshorns hitching a ride.
