Oto Catfish is Missing an Eye :(

FinAndSasha

Hey guys.

I have 4 Oto Catfish in my 10 gallon tank. I was watching them, and noticed that my smallest oto is missing an eye. I just got him a few days ago, and he’s just now swimming about the tank, so I don’t know if he came like this, or if it happened in my tank. I don’t really know what to do at this point? Should I try to treat him, and with what? I don’t have a quarantine tank. Or is he suffering and not living the quality of life? He’s still eating and playing with the other oto’s. I think i’m a little more concerned about his eye than he is, but still. What should I do? I attatched a picture. Sorry for the bad quality.

I don't think a 10 gallon has enough algae for 4 ottos. Are there any other fish in the tank?

There’s 1 betta. I suspected him at first, but the oto’s really stay out of his way and they are way to fast for him. He doesn’t like to pick on them for that reason. There is still algae in the tank that they haven’t eaten yet, and I will feed them algae wafers or blanched zucchini once or twice a week.

The culprit is defently the betta. I don't know that ottos will eat zucchini... maybe!

If s/he is acting fine, then I wouldn't worry about it. If s/he is acting confused, can't find food, or bumps into things, then I would be worried.

I’ve noticed that my oto catfish is missing an eye. He acts normal, eats, and plays but im concerned that it’s going to turn into an infection. I’ve attached a pic.

Thank you!! I’ll keep an eye on it.

I recommend you that you feed your Otto everyday. You can use the breeder box to prevent your betta from eating the wafers. Do you check your water parameters every week?

Okay! I will start to do that!
No, I check it every few weeks because my Local Fish Store said I don’t need to check it every week.

Okay! Another thing I didn't include in my last post: don't put him in the breeder box everyday for a long time because it may stress him/her. So you can put him in the breeder box every 2-3 days :)

Okay, thank you! Do you know any antibiotic I could treat him with to prevent infection?

Sorry, not really. I never had experienced this so I don't really know how to deal with that. But just keep an eye on him lol. Maybe the cause CAN be from the betta. I'm not sure. Losing an eye can be from fighting so, if you see another oto that lost its eye, it can be from the betta. The oto will get used to the tank without his eyes.
