Well guys I convinced my friend to get a fish tank an he got a 55 gallon. ANyway I'm going to give him most of my fish and keep my angels loaches and red tailed shark. Anyway with that being said I'm going to either get a Jack Dempsey Or an Oscar I have never owned both but my thinking was to get a jack dempsey and some cichlids or an Oscar with some cichlids so can I mix african and South American cichlids I was thinking putting some convicts or any of these fish

Btw what's better Oscar or Jack Dempsey in terms of being more of a pet than a fish

PS angels and whatever else I keep I plan to move to another tank I don't think Cardinals would go well with cichlids

Really both are a good choice on their own, but may be very hostile towards the rest of your stock. Not so much the loaches or the RTS, but the angels may take a beating. There's a reason why the JD is named after a prize fighter. very territorial, very aggressive.

I have both. Both will eat from my hand. Both get excited and look like a little puppy in the tank when they see me. Both will bring out their colors when they see me.

I have mine mixed with firemouths, a peacock cichlid, and a RTS and have very few problems because the firemouths are fairly aggressive, and everyone seems to ignore the RTS and peacock. Personally, I don't think the angels will be near aggressive enough to co-exist with a JD or Oscar.

If I had to choose though, as much as I like my JD, I'd have to go with the Oscar. Just seems to me that even though they can be aggressive, they seem more like they only act aggressive when another fish tries to mess with them rather than start the aggression.

Oh. That's different then. I guess it would really depend on what you're looking for. Both are excellent fish. The JD has attitude, but will be very personable with you once he gets to know you. He won't act as goofy as the Oscar though. the JD keeps his cool.

The Oscar will recognize who you are very quickly, and will be like having a water puppy once he gets to know who you are. He'll get very excited and wag his tail when he sees you.

Both are very powerful fish though, and they are jumpers so a heavy lid is a must.

I shouldn't even have my Oscar. It was a purchase my wife made, but I've gotten attached to the little guy now. It kind of screwed up my plans for what the 55G was supposed to be since I have to keep the stocking low because of the size he will grow to, but he is a neat fish. But keep that in mind... the Oscar's adult size will severely limit the amount of your additional stock. You'll have more options in the long run with the JD.
