I stumbled across the beautiful Japanese medaka fish also known as oryzias latipes! HOWEVER I have looked on many aquarium online services, all my local fish stores however I cannot find any of these lil guys Does anyone here breed medaka or know anywhere I could get my hands on a few and give a heavily planted Walstad home?

Japansese Ricefish are problematic, because there are GMO-versions (illegal in Europe, still including the UK) and the problem is, that apparently the GMO were reintroduced into the wild, endangering the wild poulations. I think that's why they are basically not to buy anywere. Other species are available apparently.

Check some laboratory supply places that carry live animals. Medaka have been in use in the laboratory for over a century, and are still widely used.

Just as expected: Reisfische
Ricefish are available otherwise.

I personally love the Oryzias woworae, extremely easy to keep/breed and colorful enough to sell readily. They were very popular for a while, and seem to have disappeared. I regret having to sell all of my youngsters that I raised..

Thanks everyone, I read about medaka fish and gmo it makes me sad IMO I think animals should be left alone in their natural state without being genetically modified (in which ricefish are). chromedome52 your oryzias woworae are beautifull!! What are their requirements, one of my favourite things about oryzias latipes is they don't need a heater, of course I am open to heaters lol! What do you feed them, temp?, ideal tank set-ups?

I don't think I used a heater with mine, as they tolerate pretty much any temperature in the 70s F. (23-27C). They do well in moderately hard water, pH 6-7.5 according to Seriously Fish, though mine were thriving in 7.8 pH. They like some water movement, though it's not necessary. Plants with hanging roots, or substitute spawning mops to receive the eggs. Female carries them in a cluster for a while, then rubs them off in the plants/mops.

I mostly fed live brine shrimp nauplii, but that's because I always had hatchers going. Also saw them eat finely powdered foods, finely crushed flakes. Gave them some live Daphnia once or twice, that drove them nuts.

They go under a couple of common names, but the first one was Daisy's Ricefish, after the person who discovered them. Also known as Neon, Blue, and Redfinned.

I ordered my Japanese Medaka fish through my local aquarium shop last year but it did take the shop quite a few weeks before they were able to get hold of them. Have you tried asking at the stores if they can order them for you?

The availability of Medaka in the UK is poor, especially the newer colour forms. The retail trade does not dare to invest in anything but the cheapest offerings. However some of the MA outlets have a couple of colour forms (a gold and a pale blue) the more spectacular colours are more common in Asia. Friedrich Bitter at Bitter Exotics (getshrimp.de ) breeds many colours obtained direct from Japan. There is a british site... Medaka.co.uk , Italian... Medaka Italia , Eropean... medaka.eu These fish will become widely available in the UK one day, but don't hold your breath waiting.

Hi All

I have a few Oryzias woworae in a community setup but I'm not geared up for breeding at the moment.
I did have more but the males can be a bit aggressive towardseach other.
Did loads of legwork trying to find some, and ended up finding some just before lockdown in Maidenhead Aquatics, Shirely, West Mids. (Inside Notcutts Garden Centre). Good sized healthy specimens as well. Going to give them a bell in the morning to see if they have any more... I'll drop a line here if they have any.
