Flowingfins might be able to help! I'm assuming its a male betta? How big is the tank? Water parameters? What kind of filter?

Hey!
It's a very young male betta. I'm guessing 6 months, plus or minus a month.

pH - stable 7.2
ammonia - 0ppm
nitrite - 0ppm
nitrate - 5-10ppm

5 gallon fluval spec 5, so it's running some sort of built in sponge filter with biomax and carbon inserts.

That sure is a strange shape, but it doesn't look too odd.
Nests are super sensitive to air quality. Maybe some dust in the air contributed to the colour?
I have a friend who smokes quite a lot, whenever she's been at the studio my poor bettas nests turn brown. (I change water immediately and remove the nests.)

Yeah it could be just from the air. Doesnt look like it could hurt!

I have never seen a bubble nest go so high out of the water before. It's super interesting. You could be right about the orange color coming from the air quality. I don't smoke, but the tank is right under a window that is open 24/7. It could be the dust that comes in. Strangest bubble nest I've ever encountered nonetheless!

I hope not!

This nest was a good inch and a half tall, a little hard to see from this perspective. I've seen them that tall, but what a uniform shape! You have a perfectionist on your hands!
I think you've sussed it, I bet it was the open window.
This thread has some really awesome pics of wild nests, if you haven't already seen them:

Wow that was an awesome thread to look through. I'm thinking about plumping up a female now after seeing all that. Thanks for the share!

Does his tank have tannins?

STOP. Research research research before you breed. There is a huge problem with people breeding for fun, or just to try it. There is already a huge problem with bettas, and breeders should be breeding to improve the species. That means you can't just throw two random fish together and expect to get beautiful fry.

Do you have a breeding thread? I seem to remember you do. Maybe post a link here?
I think a lot of people don't know the work involved, or how daunting it is. I know I researched it, and still may attempt it someday, but only when I can devote the time and do it right. In the above posts, I was certainly joking. I only posted my guy's nest to show height. I currently don't even own female bettas, though I would purchase one long before I ever attempted breeding, to familiarize myself with nuances.

I was referring to the OP. They said

Here's my usual breeding thing.
I have a couple questions.
Do you have the time for daily water changes?
Do you have the space for 500+ jars?
Do you have the money?
Are you sure you can rehome the babies?
Do you have live foods for the fry?
Are you breeding pet store bettas?
Are you breeding veil tails?
There is a huge problem with people breeding for "fun" and trying to make money. Breeding bettas is not something to take lightly, you have to be committed to it. I can tell you right now, that to do this right you will need to spend a couple thousand to get started, and that you won't make money off of it.

I ask these questions to everyone that mentions breeding, bettas are my passion and I just want to make sure they are being bred correctly, considering how aggressive they can be.

Just making sure! Intonation is so difficult in type.
In my experience, breeding anything should only be done if you are fine with losing all your money, and are certain you can responsibly house any and all resulting offspring for the entirety of their natural life.

Mornin',

Ah! This tank does have two pretty big pieces of driftwood in it. They've been settled in tanks for a long time, but I did move them around the day before I saw the bubble nest for some redecorating. That makes more sense than the air quality thing. As for the shape of the nest, I'm still in awe at how symmetrical it is.

In regards to betta breeding, I said what I said above in a more playful manner. I know the work and time involved in doing it the way it should be done. I have no intentions of breeding betta fish any time soon. I just set up a super heavily planted 32.1g tank not too long ago (thanks liveaquaria for the awesome delivery!) and it's been a heavy investment across the board already. I don't even have all my fish stocked yet!

This list makes me wish I had the time and garage space to breed. The process from start to end is by far rewarding enough. I totally agree with all of this.
