Oranda With Swim Bladder

I bought a new oranda for my aquarium from a seller on ebay. Once I unpacked him from his box I immediately noticed he had swim bladder issues so set up a 20 gallon long for him using filter media from my cycled aquarium.

So far I've dosed the tank with Epsom salts and fed him shelled peas.

I also have paraguard, Metroplex and interpret antI swim bladder and internal bacteria.

I'm holding off treating using medication to see if it improves is just constipation/ shipping stress but I was wondering if anyone has any tips for effectively treating swim bladder?

Thank you

Hi, I had the same issue with one of my goldfish, and it was shipped as well. It recovered within 24 hrs. I think it’s simply just stress and disorientation. So my opinion is to wait a little bit before doing anything further.

Thanks for your advice! Yes that was my plan.

If it doesn't improve within a couple of days/week any treatments you suggest?

Gypsy13 would be better able to answer that than I, as I don’t have any experience with it other then the one I mentioned.

Hello. Where are the pictures? A new Oranda and you’re not willing to share? For shame.
Yes. If it’s not at least some better after 48 hours, start treating with the interpet. It’s about as good as y’all can get over there. And do keep us posted please?

Pictures as requested!

He's a tricolor ThaI oranda. Black back, black face mask, white belly and this big orange wen that makes look like a toadstool lol.

His name Forrest after Forrest Gump because he is so clumsy! Manages to get himself trapped in virtually anything so I've had to baby proof his tank. Bare bottom, loose plants and smooth stones only.

Along with the interpret I have: Seachem Metroplex, interpret anti-internal bacteria and water life antI bloat and hole in the head.

I might be able to obtain some API general cure as UK amazon seems to stock it.

Might also try to source some kanaplex but that will be hard, unless someone stateside is able to send me some lol

Would the Metroplex be any good? Not tried interpret but have had success with the Metroplex in treating dropsy.

I'm also treating him with paraguard as a quarantining measure.

Can I use both the paraguard and the antibacterial or will that be too much?

Thanks for your help!

He sounds positively gorgeous! I can see why you got him. Gotta be quick here.
Use the interpet if you need to. Hopefully you won’t have to though. Don’t let anyone send you kanaplex. It’s illegal for you. And for them to ship it to you.
He sounds like he’s swimming ok?

Kanaplex not listed as an illegal import on the UK gov website but thanks for the heads up!

He swims OK and he's better than he was when I got him!

His poo looks more normal so I've fed some hikarI sinking pellets to see if he can digest those as struggles to find and eat the peas.

Still struggles to find food and occasionally 'head sits'. He is quite deep bodied and his wen is quite big so that could explain the swimming issues.

I will keep you updated

I’ve not personally visited the illegal import list but have been informed that antibiotics are on it. Kanamycin is an antibiotic. I guess I need to try to visit the list. Ugh.

My goldfish who is prone to swim bladder issues has done really well since we introduced duck weed to the tank. He shares a 36 gallon tank with one other goldfish. They are a bit over 6 years old, and since the duck weed went in 10 months ago he has not "popped", whereas before, it happened frequently, would respond well to peas, but would happen again....

Duckweed is a lovely little plant. I used to be able to keep it in my goldfish pond. But since they discovered plants are edible, they’ll clean out every one overnight. Still buy it though. Cause it’s so good for them.

I have tubs in the back yard growing it, because theY LOVE it! I know it can be a nuisance in tanks, but not with the gold fish!!!

The UK gov website doesn't seem list it and seems to place regulations on human medicine, forms you need to fill out etc .

There also seems to be allowance for medicines that are for personal uses and not commercial purposes.

I'm not sure where kanaplex would fall under that, especially since its 70 percent excipients, potassium sulfate and comes in 5 gallon tubes.

I've contacted seachem and am waiting on their response.

Hopefully that'll clear things up!

It would be great to be able to actually help fish over there for a change! Thank you.

I used to have salvinia that covered a nice portion of my 90g but my fish ate it in about a week. Spent all night eating it too lol

Used to get mine from Central Park’s Harlem Meer pond. Not sure if I’m supposed to do that, but no one’s ever stopped me.

So update, my Oranda seems to be a bit better. Still not the best swimmer but has less trouble navigating.

I should probably make another thread for this but I noticed one of my ranchus in my main tank has these red splotches across his tail and tiny red spots by his tail.

Gypsy13 do you have any idea what that might be? I'm treating the main tank for ich that I suspect a new plant brought in.

The fish is swimming and eating normally. Could these be irritations from the ich or something more serious?

Thank you

(apologies for spamming you with posts)

You’re not spamming.

Now, are the red spots the same size and where the ich was?

They seem to be. Looks like a rash where the ich is/was.

As I was looking at my ranchu I noticed my other oranda seems to have slightly lifted scales when compared to my other orandas/fish.

Still swims and eats OK though seems to hide a bit more than usual though he's always been one to hide in my driftwood/plane wreck ornament.

As a precaution I've moved him to a QT tank added Epsom salts, paraguard, Metroplex and octozin.

No buoyancy problems, no bulging eyes or anything just slightly raised scales.

Any recommendations?
