Oranda Goldfish Wen Injury! Please Help

Hello

So yesterday I finally was able to add two beautiful Oranda's to my tank, and they had been doing really well, eating, swimming, rumaging around in the substrate, overall just great. Today I went out, and when I returned home and checked up on them, my black Oranda had a chunk of his wen loose! I'm not sure how this could've happened, I have no sharp objects in the tank, sand substrate, and the other Oranda has not shown any signs of aggression whatsoever. I know you can trim the wen, but should I just let it fall off on it's own in this case of a torn wen?

He seems fine, still swimming, eating and rummaging in the sand and plants, no signs of inflammation either. The other Goldfish is not nibbling on it.

swam too close to the filter intake tube?

it seems like the wen is starting to cover up his eyes.

Thank you for your reply!

I am really not sure, could be, but my filter intake tube has a protective little cap on it to prevent bigger objects being sucked in, so I doubt it's that, but then again what else could it be.

I'm not sure about doing a Wen trim myself.. Is it safe to do? I know you need to sedate the fish and use a clean pair of scissors, but I'm honestly really scared to do that myself, I don't wanna end up hurting him. Should I wait a few days to see if the loose lump falls off on it's own?

it looks like its just hanging on by a small amount, you could probably just scoop him out with a net and use a pair of sterilized scissors and very quickly trim it off.

Might give it a try tomorrow, I'll let him rest overnight for now and see if it falls off until morning.
If I end up doing the trim, will I have to be on the watchout for infection? I just purchased some almond leaves just in case to add in my tank for disinfection, would that and my usual maintenance and water changes be fine?

do more frequent water changes. clean water reduces sickness and diseases and promotes healthy growth.
