Oranda Goldfish Tank Build.

Hello all!

My first post on this forum! In advance, thank you and nice to meet you all!

My current dilemma:

Long story short, I was ill-advised at my local pet store that a 10 gallon tank would be absolutely fine for a single oranda. Since I had an already cycled tank, I figured it would be fine. Upon getting him (his name is Luffy, for any of my fellow One Piece fans ) into my tank and, out of curiosity, doing a bit of internet searching, I realize that his 10gal tank will not last me very long at all. He is doing fine for now, but I know 10gallons just isn't enough space.

Additionally, I have quite a bit of annealed glass in my garage just waiting to be cut and put together to do a custom build, and would love to make a home big enough for two orandas (I wanna get Luffy a friend).

My question:

What are the minimum requirements in tank size for two adult orandas to live together without any future tank upgrade? If possible, any ideas on measurements for the glass? I have read that oranda's need space to turn around, being that they get so large, so I would rather have wider than deeper tank dimensions.

Being that I can have custom bracing made.

I'm not too worried about being able to put it all together properly. I have been reading for what feels like weeks on the proper tank size for one or two oranda goldfish. I have seen it range from 20gal all the way up to 55gal, and I would love a definitive answer.

If you have made it this far, thanks for reading my ramblings! .

Orandas max out at like 8" right?
I'm not a goldfish keeper, but I'd think a standard 55 should be fine.
The standard I've been told is 20gal per fancy goldfish. But a little bigger never hurts.

That's what I have read, but I have seen other places say that they can get up to an (unheard of) size of 12-17 inches if in perfect conditions. I really just wanted to see what everyone thought because I've never kept orandas before and just wanna make sure the little guy is healthy and happy.

Welcome to the forum Fellow oranda owner here. I have one oranda in a 100G, Fishy will be getting more friends soon. He uses every inch of the space.

I recommend a 40 breeder for 2. The usual rule is 20 gallons per first fish, 10 for the rest. IMO it should be 40 gallons and then 10 for the next. These fish get quite large, and a 20 is way too small. The bigger the better! And make sure your filtration is at least 10X the tanks volume per hour.

Additionally for goldies, if given two tanks of equal volume go for the one with less depth and larger foot print.

What do you mean?

Depth is how high the tank is, the footprint is the length and width. For example a betta would like a lower tank but with a larger footprint as they need to breath air from the surface so it's easier for them to swim up and get it if the tank isn't as high

Gotcha. I figured they would want more room to turn around and swim lengthwise. I've just never heard the term footprint lol
