Oranda Bullying Black Moore

Good afternoon everyone

I have had my black moore for a whole year. His name is Mr.Bubbles and he went through a very bad bubbles disease. The vet gave him a 10% chance of surviving and he made it. I love him so much and I'm so scared right now.

Just yesterday I made up my mind to buy an Oranda to keep him company. I researched their compatibility and asked the vet and the lady at the store. They all agreed there would be no problem with them living together. I called him Niguiri.

Yesterday there was no problem with them but today NiguirI keeps chasing Mr.Bubbles and kinda nudging his side, always at the same place. Here's a video of them (Mr. Bubbles' eye is like this because of the disease he went through)

Mr.Bubbles is also blind and I'm very scared for him. Is NiguirI being violent or just playing? Why won't he stop bothering him?

Please help me. I'll answer any questions you may have.

I am afraid I don't have advice, but I wanted to say "welcome" to Fishlore. Hopefully someone with experience with "goldfish" will chime in.

Hello! Welcome to Fishlore.

Goldfish will always chase, even if the pecking order is established. It's normal and perfectly fine, and generally depends on fish size more than gender. As long as they are roughly the same size, you are ok.

Give them a week or 2 to settle down. The oranda will probably calm down after a while. What you can do in the meantime is give lots of hiding spaces. I have a plastic basket in my tank, and my golds torpedo into it when existing gets too scary for them.

On another note, telescopes in my experience are the weakest "normal" type (excusing uglies like bubble eye and pearlscale). Telescopes can't see well, and anything with a short tail will outrun them. It's fine, they will probably calm down. Give Bubbles a basket and sit tight.

Edit - wait, is Bubbles completely blind?

You just made me so happy, tunafax. Thank you so much for your response. Bubbles is the first fish I've ever had and I'm very protective of him ! NigirI is far smaller than him and Bubbles doesn't seem scared at all (he actually looks happier than when he was alone in the tank) so I believe you are right and it's perfectly normal. Thank you very much, seriously

You're welcome!

One question though, do you mean that Bubbles is completely blind, or just has poor vision?

Poor Mr Bubbles! What tank size do you have?
I've never had more than 1 goldfish, and my goldfish is getting rehomed.

The eye that's popping out is completely blind the vet said. It was actually about to fall off but he is a survivor. It just kept this weird shape because of the bubbles disease. The other eye appears to be fine, I'm not sure, but he does hit the walls (and Nigiri) because he doesn't see them.

When I feed them I take the food and lightly tap at the top of the tank. Then he swims to the surface and I pour the food into his mouth. Otherwise he just pokes his mouth out and keeps opening in the hopes of finding food. This why I came to the conclusion that he was blind.

Hello, Prism!

That is one legitimate question because I too thought NigirI was angry because he was lacking space. It's a 70 liter tank, I know it's not enough but I'm still saving up for a bigger one. However, since NigirI was in a quite small tank with another Oranda at the store, I thought he'd have no problem.

Aww poor Mr Bubble . Just wanted to say guys like u who have nice heart make me smile . Mr Bubble for sure has a good owner

I would be scared too and probably I would return the oranda and find another goldfish who doesn't bother Bubble . Bubble has been through so much and I would hate to see him get bothered .

Btw if Bubble is blind , is it necessary to find a company for him ?

I'm new to this hobby though

HI Goldfishgirl, thank you for your reply and your kind words. I really appreciate them.

Regarding your question, I'll give the thing some backstory. Some months ago I bought another Telescope (and orange one, this time) which was still quite small. Poor thing died of the bubbles disease and Bubbles has been alone ever since. Since then, I often found him just laying at the bottom of the tank facing the wall and he looked a bit apathetic. He would only move for the food so I figured he felt lonely. He behaves differently now, I think he's more active, even when Nigiri's not pecking him. I think he doesn't see him, but he feels him.

Which makes me think, maybe the fact that Bubbles doesn't see is what was giving me the sensation of NigirI bothering him. Let me explain. I've watched them closely and NigirI hardly ever gets to touch Bubbles, but Bubbles flinches and swims away a bit because he doesn't see him coming and it startles him. Maybe that's why it looks like NigirI is hurting him.

The store tanks are so small, one of my stores had an arowana in a 10-20g.
The fish are getting taken so quickly sometimes that they don't care about the sizing.

This is a weird thing, but I just noticed an advertisement.
