I've finally reached a point in the hobby where I have enough extra random stuff lying around that I can throw together a complete setup in an hour without buying a thing! This is honestly so satisfying.
The male guppies in my 30 gal don't seem to be fitting in well- they bully the little panda cories and harass the pleco and totally dominate the food, plus my water out of the tap is a little low in mineral content for their liking. I've been debating on what to do with them, they're so gorgeous and fun I really didn't want to get rid of them. But I met a woman in my town who has the most amazing guppies breeding in two massive indoor totes in her house, and I'm gonna get some females from her so the boys finally have something to do!
I went to the basement and pulled out a spare 20 gallon, threw in some fluorite, sand, and gravel leftovers from other builds, put on the HOB's I used on my 5 and 10 gallon tanks before I switched them from sponge filters, found the extra heater I got for free along with one of my used tank purchases, got a piece of driftwood from the frog tank I just took down, and took plant trimmings from all 3 other tanks. BOOM, instant tank. I put some media from my 30 gallon in the filters and then tossed a bunch of pond snails in there to make sure it's good to go, the girls are coming later this week. The only things I'm missing are a lid and a light, but I think I can figure those out with stuff in the house too!
I'd post a photo, but apparently the extra fluorite I added was from the UNrinsed bag, so the water is brown still. Darn.
But in general, the satisfaction of being able to go into the basement/garage and pull out tanks, filters, heaters, and anything else I might need is just the coolest. I feel like a super legit hobbyist now!
