Online Sources for Purchasing Plants

We're in the process of setting up and planting several tanks (one at a time) and live about 1.5 hours from our 'local' aquarium. They're often out of plants that I'm looking for and though I can call ahead and have them hold certain things, sometimes even that doesn't work.

So, is there a place you guys would recommend online?

I've also seen plants sold on ebay, but I'm a little leery of this. Have any of you had good/bad experiences with purchasing aquatic plants there?

I have purchased plants from eBay and have been lucky so far. I just don't order plants during the winter because I don't like to take a chance with them freezing during shipment. There is another person online that people on this forum have gotten plants from. It is . I'm sure someone will be along with more places.

Once you get 50 posts you will be able to take advantage of the BST section of this forum and get quality plants.

I've bought from and was very happy with the selection and he plants I received. I also just bought some plants from Peabodys paradisebut they won't arrive until tomorrow or Thursday for me to give you a full review. Great prices though (including shipping) and very fast on shipping out the order.

Great - thanks

Eh yeah, didn't consider the cold. We live in Michigan so it's pretty darn cold here now. Is it still okay to purchase them online or is it best to wait until May?

I'd like the aquarium completely planted before putting the fish in, but also don't want the shipped plants to freeze either.

If you can find a place fairly close and they throw a heat pack in, you should be ok. I know I wanted to order some from a forum member here, but they are in Florida so I'm not going to chance it at this time.

I just barely got some really nice plants today. I am very pleased with what I got. A huge wisteria, some willow moss (I actually ordered the cheaper 'mixed moss' but was quite pleased to get the willow moss instead), ludwigia repens, and a banana plant.

Plants can tolerate a much wider range of temperatures than fish or inverts. They actually do better in colder weather, for the same reason that stores keep flowers refrigerated. As long as they don't get frozen they are good, and normally they stay relatively climate controlled in a mail truck, just be sure to pick them up when they are delivered so they don't sit out in the elements. Another option is to do a 'hold for pickup', where the post office holds your package for you, most shippers will do this if you ask.

also +1 for Peabodys paradise

Good morning,

Live Plants:

I've used them several times to purchase live plants and I've always been happy with the plants that I've received.

I've ordered from Aquabid (voitans) and Aquariumplants.com; both were excellent.

plantedaquariumscentral seems to have a good selection but I don't think I'm a fan of the shipping rates or the use of raw fiberglass insulation as packing material.

The fiberglass doesn't touch the plants, they're wrapped in newspaper which is wrapped in fiberglass which is wrapped in plastic, which is then boxed lol. I never had to touch the stuff to unwrap it, and the heat didn't kill the plants when I ordered in 90+ degree weather.

I know, it's all bagged up, I just don't like fiberglass as an insulation material since it's itchy and some people are very allergic to it. I've watched multiple unboxing videos of their product and the people are handling the insulation thoroughly while getting their plants out. I'm just not keen on having to put a disclaimer on the top of every package for fear of someone suing or complaining.

I shipped with fiberglass insulation for fish packages for a while a few years back and there were a ton of complaints, as often as 1 in 5 would mention it. So I don't use it anymore and have opted for friendlier methods, but to each their own, just giving my opinion.

+1 - Dustin's a good guy to get fish from, and it's an individual so you'd be helping support his hobby & family
