Would this tank set up work I would be ready and willing to do constant water changes and would have no decor that goes all the way up to the top so the crayfish can't get to the african butterfly

It will probably work, but the cray might still find a way up there. Climbing the heater or filter intake or something. They can swim upwards a short distance to grab onto things.

Thanks and I would be very surprised if he could make it up there even then he is very very slow

He's just faking it to make you think he can't climb

They're persistent, wily little critters. And they're nocturnal. I've had one climb up a large up-tube by wedging himself between it and the back of the tank, and get out of a 55. An old rock climber's technique, used for climbing "chimneys".

Just seal up any openings in the lid large enough for him to squeeze through. Painter's tape is nice because it's removable. Duct tape is more permanent. I hot melt glued some of that plastic knitting frame stuff to the lid in one tank.

We always joke that our escape artist has brain damage from the lack of oxygen while he was out. He was out for 8 to 12 hours!!! He did a good job of hiding, but finally came out into the middle of a room and "gave himself up". Maybe he knew he was a goner if he didn't!

I could honestly play the music from shaqting a fool while I watch him. He's so funny and I don't plan on having any chords other than an air stone in the tank but I watch him before I go to sleep for hours

He can climb that. Those claws are good at grabbing things that size.

Hmmm it's tough though I want to be able to look at the butterfly fish but I like to have an air stone in my tank

Perhaps the airline for the airstone could be siliconed to the tank interior so it runs down a corner then from there across the bottom to wherever you want it to bubble from? You would silicone all but the last inch or two of tubing this way (there needs to be at least a little left un-siliconed so your airstone can be attached and it could sit atop the substrate) and you could cover all but the tail end of the tube/airstone with substrate to hide the less than attractive airline tubing glued across the middle of the tank floor and the section along the corner (in theory) would not be exposed enough for the cray to get a hold of to climb.
