One filter or two?

I just got my largest tank ever, a beautiful 72-gallon bowfront. I like AquaClear filters, and I'm just wondering if it will be better to use one larger filter for this tank or two smaller ones?

I use 2 AC 70 on my 55g. Yes, its a little more than necessary, but it helps to keep the water very clean and clear. The biggest reason I see to having 2 filters instead of 1, is if 1 stops working and goes undetected, you still have 1 that is working until you can replace the other one or get it fixed. Besides that, you would have 2 filters to stuff full of media, which means you can have a lot more media in 2 than you could in 1. I think 2 AC70 would do fine on your tank. Otherwise you could do 1 AC110 and 1 AC50. I like uniformity and so that's why I use 2 of the same. I'm sure you know you want 8-10x the tank volume in gph filtration. The AC110 does 500 and the AC50 does 200 = 700, and 2 AC70 would do 600 total.

BTW, congrats on the new tank!!

Congrats on your new tank! And I like 2 filters also, as it not only provides redundancy, but you can alternate cleaning them so as to avoid cycle bumps.

Cool! I have the 72 bowfront too and use 2 HOB filters ( Aqueon 55/75 )
I buy the cut to fit media pads on amazon and use them in the 2 slots ( each filter ) plus I have other media ( sponge and biomax ) on each filter as well.

Combined, the 2 filters are pumping out at 800 gph.

As stated earlier, best to have 2 running imo in case one stops and for the extra media it can handle.

How are you? The catfish are doing great!

@, your 72 bowfront planted the idea in my head! I had never even heard of them until you were telling me about yours! I'm so excited!

We're about to move into our house FINALLY. Cannot wait to set up my tanks and get settled!

So glad the little cories are still doing well!

be sure to post pix. we love seeing them. I like canister filters myself but that's just a personal thing.

Thanks, JeffB! To be honest, canister filters intimidate me. Lol!

Like alink I use two filters on all our tanks except the 10 gal betta tank. I generally use a Mainland HOB and a Magnum 350 canister.

Hello,

I like the idea of having 2 filters on your aquarium. This will also should provide more surface water movement on each end of the aquarium. More surface water movement, more oxygen in the water for your fish.

Congrats on the new aquarium! I hope you can share some photos at some point.
