On the hunt!

I'm thinking about getting my mom a small, young dog for her birthday or christmass (gives me at least a month to really decide, and find one). I am hoping to find one that's fixed, has all its shots, is not a barker, and is reletively calm and know when its time to play, and when its time to settle down.

I had it narrowed down to two, on craigslist, both male. One was a poodle mix, but he was 4 years old, and I was trying not to go much over a year, but didn't mind making an exception for the perfect dog. Other than that, he did seem perfect. Quite, and calm, and had the sweetest dang face you've probably ever seen. But, I found out, through an older ad that he has a flea allergy, and that's not something I really want to deal with at the moment, as we do have some fleas. So, there went that one...

That only leaves one left. A 3 1/2 month old male maltiese. All shots, already house trained, but not fixed. A sweet little puppy like that won't last long, so it's something I'll have to think about. I love that's he's already house trained, but every bit that we don't have to pay for would be great. Of corse, exceptions can always be made for the perfect fit. Shots are really the biggest thing, when talking about male dogs. If it were a female I was considering, I'd say being spayed was the biggest deal.

I was looking at local rescue groups, but they want $200+ dollars for their dogs. If we had that sort of money, I would totally go for it, but I can go to the Humane Society and adopt 2-3 dogs for that, and they have received all the same care. Btw, I'm also looking at the Humane Society. ATM, all they have are pits and pit mixes. I'd love to get one of them, but this isn't my dog lol

So, this is the beginning of my quest. I may end up not even doing this, but mom has been cooing over any small dog and puppy she sees for the last several months. She's really not letting it go. And when her 14 year old lab died in March, she was looking for a dog all over the Internet, but finances kept her from making a decision. As much as I want to make it a surprise, I think I should talk to her about it. We'll see how serious it gets... Couple days ago, she was callin me from her bed room like she was being murdered to look at a puppy for adoption on the news

So, wish me luck! I'll keep you guys updated

Here's a link to the maltese I'm considering right now.

One thing to think about with a dog like a maltese is the cost of grooming and the time involved in maintaining their coat. My mom has a maltese/poodle mix and gets her groomed about every six weeks. It costs her $35 each time. Add on top of that the time it takes to brush her every day and bathe her once a week, and it's a HUGE investment of time and energy.

I know lol I have no problems with home-grooming, though. I groom my grandmas Shihzhu and hanavese a lot. Give them puppy cuts, and that keeps life easy-ish. Like I said, though, I'm in no hurry at all. If he goes before I really decide, so be it! Just means there's a better dog around the corner, or we aren't meant to have another

I know the feeling. I'm on the hunt for a cairn terrier puppy and my boyfriend is kind of freaking about it. Mainly because of how expensive they are. I have a friend who has a litter due at the end of this month, but unless I sell a whole ton of cars before they're ready to go home, that's just dreaming.

These a few of them in rescue groups down here, but I'm not going to pay that much, as much as I'd love to.

Most rescues (or breeders offering adults for adoption) charge around $300-800 for a purebred cairn. That's better than the $1000-1800 you'll usually pay for a well-bred puppy, though. I had a lead on one just north of me that was a four-year-old female (a little older than what I wanted, but I was willing to deal) for a $50 adoption fee, but the day I emailed about her, her foster family decided they wanted to keep her. I wasn't really devastated about it, though. She was severely overweight (weighed 32lbs...adult female cairns are supposed to be around 15lbs) and she didn't have a very high prey drive (I want to compete in Earth Dog trials, so a high prey drive is a must).

I was looking at Jocelyn lol Shes pretty cute, that's for sure. I'm not sure a terrier is what we need in our house, though. And sice she was the only one in Honor that I was really looking at, I did t look into their adoption fees. Canine castaways is expensive, as well :/

I forget how close we actually are to eachother Akari. Through my school we deal with a LOT of dogs. Infact we have some puppies coming in with a mom this week. They are young, maybe 2 weeks old and mom is a good feeder. They are pit mixes, but they are small. Mom is maybe corgI sized. They were a stray group found. We generally give them all their shots at the according times and such. Neutering though is left up to who ever takes them. I plan on threading some pics this week anyways. Just thought id throw in a heads up. However, if the dead line is a month, probably gonna wanna go with the Mal.

Terriers are great...as long as you give them a job. Earth Dog and agility are both great ways to keep terriers occupied, and Earth Dog plays on their natural instincts.

Thanks, but a pit mix isn't something Either of us have the time for. And too big. I'm looking for something in 15 pound range. Shihzhu's, poodles (not a pure minI poodle. Dear god, no), long haired Chi's, random mini-mutts... I was thinking maybe a Cocker, but they get a bit bigger than I want. Thanks though

I'd like to have a dog that, when left to its own devices doesn't destroy the house XD When I have more time, I'd love to have a larger terrier, like a pit, or English Bull Terrier :3

I should say a pit mix mix. Since mom is only partial pit and again, only CorgI sized Tiny little thing. Still, mal sounds more like what you are looking for. Still putting a thread up of the little pups though XD. Want more pics of the mal when you get it!

There will probably be a lot more dogs needing homes as we get closer to Christmas and even a little after. Puppies always go fast, but adults seem to stay around for a while looking for homes.

Our PetSmart does Adopt-A-Thons as well. I have no idea what their fees are, but that might be a consideration for you too.

I dunno if I'll get the Maltese or not. He's pretty cute, but it's a little too soon to decide. I just started thinking about this yesterday LOL PetSmart locally doesn't do adoptions, other than cats, but PetCo does. If I want to go through PetSmart, I'd have to go a bit north, which I don't mind.

Here's my most recent find. I asked about the puppy in the second pic. Totally adorable! I'm not sure if this was a planned litter or not... I asked about the puppy and the parents, and depending on if I like their answer or not, I'll ask of there is a rehoming fee. These guys are about an hour and a half away from me.

Personally, I wouldn't do it. Sure he is cute, but $50 is too cheap. Sounds more like a backyard breeder (correct me if I'm wrong).

I'd avoid dogs like that, quality of genetics isn't accounted for. I've seen many poorly bred dogs live diminished lives. If you want a mix, save a life and rescue a dog. That's my opinion anyways

They are asking $100, and I don't have that much money ATM, since I need to pick him up tomorrow if I'm going to take him. So, I'm gunna borrow some from family and pay them back next week.

NO! Don't do it!

First things first, people should pick out their own dogs. While I think your idea of a dog as a gift is very poor, I think the idea of a gift certificate for a dog as a gift is great.

Do NOT purchase a dog from Craigs List. Trust me, I've been in dog rescue almost 20 years. You are doomed for failure and will end up on Judge Judy suing the seller for millions, which you will not get.
