OMG! My snail laid an egg clutch!!!!!

One of my mystery snails just laid a huge egg clutch. I'm not sure which one.....
Rewind - I had two small snails in the tank since May. Hardly any activity - saw them occasionally.

FAST FORWARD - I put in a very large mystery snail LESS THAN a week ago because my Betta was flaring at it and picking at it ( Gigantor was always in the Betta tank )

So all of a sudden, BOTH my other snails LOVED Gigantor and has been hanging out as "backpacks" on the back of Gigantor's shell ( or so I thought )

DO THEY BREED THAT FAST???? LESS than a week??????
When will the eggs hatch????? I'm so excited.
Want to do a water change before all of them hatch....
Please help!!!!

Thanks!!!

Where is the clutch? It may or may not hatch depending on the area it is in. It takes 14 to 20 days before they hatch. Rogue well have a better answer for you I hope. Good luck

Wow that's quick! Its definitely a shock for me!!!!
The clutch is in the corner of the tank near the filter intake - high enough where no one can get to them ( I did a water change today and brought the water down a bit ) It's pretty humid in the tank or a lot of water condensation so hopefully that will keep the eggs moist. Gee, I guess I should be careful of what I wish for! I said I wanted more mystery snails - not 100 of them!

My Mysteries began breeding as soon as my male was put in my tank of females. Within 2 weeks, I had 3 clutches, and she continued to lay egg clutches for 4 months after that breeding. My male currently lives in his own private bungalow with my Betta, and the females live in the big community tank. I have managed to give away over 100 of the hatched mystery snails from a total of 5 fertile clutches laid. They are fun to watch grow up. the female will store sperm for up to 3 months, and when she so decides to lay more eggs, chances they will all be fertile clutches.

You could send Laura (MD Angels) a message, she breeds mysteries so she would have all the info you want. Rogue has also bred mysteries, but I think his was unintentional ;D I'm sure he could answer all your questions as well

Congrats on the clutch!! The larger snail you have is probably the female if the other two were hanging out on her back. That means they were..uh... making babies ;D. I splashed water on the eggs a couple of times a day to keep it moist and they usually hatched in around two weeks. Careful not to touch them. They break easily and leave a sticky mess on your fingers. If you want to see some pictures of my snails growing up I can give you the link to my thread.

Mine was completely intentional. I was trying very hard lol. Well.. I was at first. You should read the first couple pages of my snail blog lol.

Thank you for the replies!!! This is so exciting!!!
But really, the one snail was in the tank only 4 days!!! Could they have bred in that short of time??????

I wanted a few more mystery snails - I wasn't expecting to possibly see "hundreds"
None the less, the I CAN'T WAIT!!!!

Yes, you will be getting hundreds.!

Rogue and I talked a lot when he was ready to be a snail grandpa. As exciting as it is though, I have to give you the same serious speech I gave him, because being unprepared to raise hundreds can result in heart break.

So . . . If you don't want or cannot accomodate a huge responsibility (not to be taken lightly) you should cut the clutch (at least ) in half, remove it and dispose it by soaking it water for a day and then tossing it. It can take up to 2 weeks for the babies to develop, so you won't be killing any this way, I promise.

To grow out apple snails, you will need to do lots of water changes, feed them a varied and large diet, supplement lots of calcium, maintain the ph above 7 (best around 7.4-6) which is difficult, because they lower ph by absorbing calcium from the water. You will also need a lot of space. If too crowed, they do not grow as fast, or as well, and you can end up with bad water quality, small snails with shell problems, and snails dieing off left and right because of competition for food and all of the above.

Your 37 will be sufficient for no more than half the clutch to grow out. They do take a couple of months (conditions dependant) to grow out to sale size (marble+). Any more clutches that appear should be destroyed until your existing clutch is grown out and sold.

I don't like to sound hard, but I made many mistakes when I first started out, and I only want to pass along my experience and knowledge so that everyone who wants to enjoy the wonderful little apples, - can - with out going through the learning curve and having the snails pay for it!

Any questions you have, feel free to ask!

Thanks for the advice Laura. I will do that with half the clutch as you had suggested. I also have a 5 gallon tank I have been using to house a Betta ( hope to be able to move my betta in a new cycled tank soon )
and that can house some of the snails until I find suitable homes for them. I am not planning to keep them - maybe I will do a RAOK?

You could use the 5 gallon in the first 3-4 or so weeks for sure. But they do grow quickly, and eat tons, and poop tons, so be sure to keep up those water changes.

After they reach about popcorn kernal size (the seed before its cooked), you should really be moving them into something bigger, like your 37. If you are only raising about 25-40 snails this should be fine. It will take a couple of months though, for them to reach a good, sellable size.

Sell, I will just give them away.. Lol
Something about "karma" cause if I sell them, she will probably keep laying eggs every week!! Lol
Yes, I will need a plan b soon but I will wait to make sure they even hatch!
