Hi all,

I have just set up my new betta tank. I used water from my community tank and also put an old piece of filter media in the tank. How long should I leave it in?

Good morning Scanlon,

I would leave the seeded filter media in the tank for at least 1 month. Too, it may speed things along if you can add it into the filter itself.

Have you added the fish? If so, be sure to keep an eye on your water parameters just in case the cycle isn't instant. If it isn't instant then it will surely cut down the amount of time it takes to cycle. Daily water changes with Prime or Amquel + would be needed.

Best wishes for your fish!

Good morning Ken

I have added the fish already. The filter media came from a 55 gal into a 5 gal. I'll keep an eye on the parameters.

Thanks for the the link, very useful.

Glad to help!

Hopefully you'll have the instant cycle. I've had good success seeding tanks
