Ok…. I’m perplexed. Which Cory is this?

Got this guy labeled a Peppered Cory. I’ve never seen a Cory w as much blue as this guy has. He lives happily w my Betta in the 5.5g tank. Plz tell me what I really have. Thnx.

At certain times, he almost has a bluish glow abt him. He is smaller than my Bronze aenus Cory fish. He didn’t seem to fit in w my Bronze gangs, so he became the perfect buddy for the Betta.

It does look like a Peppered cory with interesting coloring.

No cory expert but looks like peppered cory - with a fantastic colour variation. He's a beautiful animal. Thank you for sharing the photo! :)

Wow….thnx guys. After I looked at PC pics, I was baffled. It does indeed have the colors. He’s also a joy to watch. The Betta was curious abt him, but now just visits wo issue. That tank is totally awesome….two delightful fish.

It is a beautiful Peppered.
Sorry to say but these fish need to be in a group and in a bigger tank. Also they are coolwater Corys so not that compatible with a betta.

Thank you for your comments. First, please understand that I am merely discussing the issues you brought forth and am not being confrontational, condescending, or combative. I see your points and appreciate your assistance.

When this guy was in the initial group of 7 Bronzes, he was constantly in the corner and rarely got out as he (notably smaller) was overpowered and sort of bullied. I had to move him. I agree with you that he should be in a group and I’ll see what I can do. A larger tank, too, would be better. The only ‘safe‘ tank I had atm with smooth fine gravel was the 5g Betta tank.

When I researched temperature, the results (that I found) were different in that the temperature of my Betta tank (77-78 degrees) was in the acceptable range. 80-90% of the sources I looked into, had the requirements at between 70-80 degrees for Peppered Corys. A couple did, admittedly, have a range listed of between 64-74 degrees. Here is the care sheet for PC at this site.

So…….not to make excuses, but to explain myself……I had to choose, miserable life in big (ideal sized) tank being bullied or in a smaller (not ideal size) tank moving around freely. I spent time observing to see how he was doing. Perhaps I’m lucky, but he’s been doing great….eating well, swimming freely, and appearing quite healthy.
I am trying to find more quality Peppered Corys to make a larger group as you suggested. Eventually I hope to get 6-8 and put them in my 60g tank after adding the current 60g Bronze Corys into the 75g tank and its Bronzes.

I don't know how to quote bits properly bgarthe, so apologize if I'm doing this poorly. I'd assumed you had a bunch of these guys & just one had the stunning blue. And I skimmed the part about your betta ...

I started a Agassazii Cory & single male betta crowntail tank last fall & all was well. 20 g long, heavily planted, cave system, the betta was amongst the least aggressive I've kept over the years & the cory of course, naturally well defended. My anecdotal research & experience told me this was a safe tank for all the animals.

Until it wasn't. I asked for advice here recently - here's the thread: https://www.fishlore.com/aquariumfishforum/threads/outlook-for-fish-stung-by-cory.531531/
but haven't updated yet. The betta has thus far survived & his face is healed. It seems tho that the toxin lingers & has caused enough damage that I'm concerned for his long-term survival.

Taking surrenders & shuffling tanks on the reg I 100% understand having to move animals around & not having ideal numbers. Nor have I been concerned about temp in the shared tank. But it has been a bummer to watch this betta suffer the effects of a cory sting, as well as hurriedly treating & setting up yet another tank so he can be safely solo. He's a betta, hormonally driven to aggression & I feel like a fool for taking that risk based on anecdotal evidence of safe betta-cory tanks.

It sounds like you're kinda pressed into a corner with tanks right now & may not be able to move anybody soon. Just thought I'd give you the info as you contemplate tank set ups.

Apologize for even bringing this up over a peaceful post of your very beautiful cory, especially given that this is far from your 1st aquatic rodeo & you didn't ask for advice! Just thought you'd appreciate the info from another keeper still holding onto that saddle horn.

Thanks aquanata. I appreciate your warning and will try to figure something out. The last thing I want to do is cause harm to an awesome Betta or any other fish for that matter. You have nothing to apologize for and your post was perfect. I do have a pair of bare bottom QTs that I keep running w a few fish 24/7, but they, being bare bottom, would be of concern for a Cory.……I think (having no fine gravel/coarse sand substrate).

Yup. Corys need that sand. And betta need protection from themselves. And we should all have perfectly balanced ecosystems, in infinite number of tanks, ethically stocked from LFS that always have exactly what we need at reasonable cost. Instead, we balance risks & learn to problem solve. Go figure. Makes for a fascinating & enduring hobby tho.

Good luck with all the tank & animal shuffling. I appreciate that you share tank work updates & photos of beautiful animals like your cory. Hope you're able to find more like him. I'm about 9 weeks out waiting on healthy Agassizzii & hoping I don't have to treat anchor worms when they arrive. :)

Think this is a better reference

Corydoras (lineage 6) paleatus • Callichthyidae • Cat-eLog

Funny fact : There are two pics of one of my fish hahahaha. Strangely labeled as albino now (which it wasn't).

I've never whitnessed any issues between C.aeneus and C.paleatus.
