Mmmmm I do love the cheese, we took a field trip there when I was in 6th grade and went to one of the cheese factories I guess you would call it. It was so good. What are fry pies?

Fry-pies are a half-circle shaped pastry. A round piece of pastry dough is covered on one half with filling -- often with a sweet-cream-cheese layer -- like pumpkin, black raspberry, lemon, or whatever -- or the "Buckeye" kind with chocolate & peanut butter -- then it's folded over and crimped and fried and then glazed. Yum!

I didn’t know you were Amish. I’ll have to check out those fry-pies on my visit to the Amish market. Hopefully they have them.

Whats something you've learnt about fishkeeping that surprised you/made an impact/remember vividly about?

Hmm.... Good question. I started without any clue as to what I was doing and still cannot understand how my first guppies not only survived but thrived. The only book I had was a little out-of-date washed-out-color pamphlet. So I thought I really had it going with my blue gravel and obviously fake plants. A big impact or vivid memory was my first visit to a pet-store that was not our local Walmart. Wow! So many beautiful fish! I was walking around in awe and wanted to know what each one was and was totally bedazzled at all the stuff. My fish supplies up until then were: a can of flakes, a net, and a little pail. Not long after that, I requested some books on tropical fish from our local library. Seeing all those beautiful pictures and reading all about the intricacies of the hobby was like stepping into a whole new world complete with Latin names. I remember very vividly looking forward to those winter evenings so I could sprawl out on the couch and read and dream. I'm sure I had my parents rolling their eyes -- maybe even worrying -- as I tried to sound out the Latin names in a whisper and started compiling a list of fish I wanted.

What surprised me? Learning that I was doing everything wrong! No knowledge of cycling and no idea that dumping a pail of well water in my tank every so often was not good-fish-stewardship! (It's good we did not have chlorinated water!) So it was a surprise to discover how complex water chemistry can be and how important it is to cycle. Beginners' luck, I suppose, that any of those fish survived!

No. I found the picture online. It is the kind of buggy we have, though. (Pictures of our buggies up-close can be found in the "Horses" section of this forum.)

What’s your typical day like?

I'm usually up by 4:30-4:45 AM this time of year, as our son leaves for work around 5:20 AM
Then I have a cup of coffee and feed and watch my fish a while before going outside to care for our animals.
We eat breakfast and I get ready for work, arriving in the office anytime from 6:15 AM to 7:30 AM depending how busy we are.
Work, Fishlore, etc. until time to go home around 5:30 - 5:45 PM.
I usually take care of my fish as soon as I get home
Barn chores, supper, then an evening to do what I want -- social activities, yard work, whatever the day holds....
We usually end our day with family devotions, reading, and a bedtime snack.
We're pretty boring.

How do you take your coffee?

Black. (Though the pumpkin spice creamer found in the staff room this time of year sometimes finds its way into my coffee.)
