The only one who actually kept beckfordI out of those three would be the person who spawned them. Note that his article says the tank was so heavily planted the fish could barely get around. If you are heavily planted, they may be alright, but you probably won't see much of them.

The other two obviously have never kept the species, as they call them "timid", and they don't even mention that the males are the only ones with color. The idea that these are slow moving fish is laughable. Once again, someone writing an article based on what someone else said.

I have two pairs of beckfordI that are currently over 2.25 inches. The males fight incessantly when there are too few fish in the tank. The third place loser of these fights appears to be wasting away slowly. As soon as my fry were sexable, the dominant male was chasing everyone else. I'm quite certain that he has killed a couple of competitors. These are 1.25 inch young in a 10 without plants. I'm planning to move them soon.

Indeed it is. Notice that the people there didn't seem to be aware of the natural behavior of this species, either. The truth is not out there, unfortunately. However, I shall do my part to correct that!

you corrected me so that's a good start.

I'm kinda bummed because I really like these fish and I'm seeing the downs of having a ten gallon..and these are both males I have but they swim together all day then sleep in different spots in the tank.
I did notice that when I turn on the lights in the morning that the black stripe they have turns into two black spots but after the light is on for ten minutes they get the normal strip back is this for camoflage?

Yes. There is one species of Pencilfish that keeps the nocturnal pattern all the time, Nannostomus espei. Never had the opportunity to get them myself.

Although they are larger, N. eques is a fairly sedentary species, and a few of them might be fine in a 10. It is commonly known as the Diptail Pencil. This is the species that is responsible for the name "Pencilfish", as they sit at an angle with the tail hanging down.

There are prettier species, but they are even meaner than the beckfordi. Learned that one the hard way, too.

I have a 10 gallon pea puffer tank with ghost shrimp. The booger puffer is the pickiest eater I've ever seen. He will only eat frozen bloodworms. Nothing else. At all.

You might do this already, but since there isn't much else you can do, soak them in garlic guard and vita-chem. That's the pro about them at least eating frozen food, you can soak it in those, medicine (dewormer!), etc. At least those should boost their diet a little. What else have you tried? I just don't want to scare anyone away from these guys because of their diet.

Anyone mention dwarf hatchetfish?
Those wouldn't work in a 10g. They are too active, and need to be kept in groups.
junebug......
How big are yours now? Full grown?

They are fine in a 10 mine school swimming against the filter outflow, they don't get much over an inch and aren't as active as many believe them to be.

Darters are elongated but not really eel like. I keep wild caught ones.

I don't have any hatchetfish. Probably will get pygmies when I get my fishroom set up. But I agree, there are no species of hatchets suitable to a 10 gallon. They are way too active and need too many members per school.

Imo Dwarf puffers are best kept on their own, corys would be sitting targets

Even those can be attacked.... are you planning on having cories in a 10g? No cories are suitable for that size tank.....

no I'm not planning to have corys in my ten,I have corys in my ten.my mom got two of them for me on cristmas and she would feel really bad if I rehomed them and I have to consider her feelings too not just the fishes.and they are happy and always full of eggs and are laying them like crazy but since there are no males they aren't fertile.I know they like schools but if I get more id have the prob of over crowding so I'm doing the best I can with what I have until I can get my mom to let me have a bigger tank...btw I'm really begging

and too anyone out there looking at this and thinking (oh,this guy keeps happy corys in a ten so I will too) they my be somewhat happy in a ten but theyll be even happier in a bigger tank with a school of 6 or more.
