Odd growth/damage. Help Asap

Nero has something odd going on undr his chin. A few days ago I noticed a little bit of something hanging out below his gill on his chin, I thought possibly it was his beard that hadn't folded right(doesn't have much of a beard). Today, as in, 1 hour ago it looks 10 times worse.

Not sure how to describe it, just looks fleshy and sort of red, again kind of like his beard isn't folded right, its coming from the lower are of his gills.

There have been no changes in care, the temps, perameters are all good. Nothing has changed, this has just..apppeared. Of course, I'm stressing to pieces.

Also, its not a solid looking growth like a tumor. Its very fleshy like shredded tissue.

I'm sorry your betta is stressing you.

Looking at the picture, it looks a bit like a parasitic infection. Maybe you could try QuickCure or one of the other general parasitic meds.

I want to be cautious with meds but ill see what I can do. I have a kordon general parasitic med. I may give it a shot, I'm assuming the thought is gill flukes or worms?

EDIT: The reason I'm being cautious with meds btw is that my Vt next to him is rather sensitive to meds for some reason. However if I have to treat him for parasites or viruses I will treat the whole tank.

I completely understand your concern. It appears to me that there are parasites attached to the area under his beard. But you would know better looking at the fish.

Hope you are able to figure out what it is and cure him.

My friend maryanne, big time breeder, genetics master and the such told me she thinks he may have thyroid swelling, causing his beard to be pushed out. Upon closer inspection, all we are seeing is his beard, its just crumpled. Still, we will see. Maybe it will clear up.

How do you treat thyroid issues in fish? Makes sense that his beard could be crinkled and pushed out from thyroid swelling.

Theres the thing, you dont. I suppose a microsurgeon with a history of vet studdies and a great knwoledge of betta biology could come up with a solution but for you average keeper, its a wait and see game. The condition is obviously not a common one, but nero has thus far showed to be not so typical so I don't doubt anymore. What I'm afraid of is if it gets worse, I'm sure we can all imagine what happens when a bettas thyroid goes wack.

No progress. I can give a good description now, there's a pink mass with some clear tissue hanging off it and some white threads sticking off it(not fungus or worm like). There is also a VERY small and odd opaque spot/bump behind his eye. Doesnt look like ich. Possible just a stray bit of copper scale.

His breathing is fine Btw. I wonder if this isn't some messy tumor

This shows the clear fleshy bits, it really scares me, it still doesn't cross me as a fungus yet though, it seems to have ripped through the skin on his chin meaning.....hookworm or turmor?

Also, tail regrowth seems to have halted or slowed down quite a bit

I'm watching for any signs of secondary infection

He was stressed a little by the photos, I haven't seen him stress bar much before.

That does look nasty!! Have never dealt with that before. Could be a type of cancer, hard to say.

Best of luck.

Thanks. Why must I always find the rare cases ??? Was bad enough when my danios all died of some wasting diease, then my adf to crypto. I just hope whatever it is it heals. Whats really bad is that NONE of the members of the betta forum, even the 40+ year keepers know what this is -_-. Just having a bad run with fish I guess.

Right now the thing has a large white chunk of flesh on it. Not a clue what it is, maybe fungus or just part of a tumor. I'm thinking I may try a fungus med though. Reccomendations, prefferably snail safe but I can relocate. I have a tank I can move him into aswell.
