Odd Green Terror Behavior Question

My fiance's fish, Zeus, is about seven months old. He's in a 55 gallon tank with no other fish and proper filtration - including a large bubble wand. A few days ago something odd happened. He started taking in as much food as he can in one mouthful and it flies out his gills instead of going down his throat. He is fed Wardley Cichlid Flake Food twice per day. This has been going on for every other meal time since about last Friday. When he takes smaller bites, as in one flake from the surface, he is fine, but when he sucks in several at a time, out they come.

Any suggestions as to what is going on would be appreciated. We are worried he isn't eating enough since it goes out his gills.

Hello Cobalt. It's very common for fish food to exit the gill area. As long as he's eating and not losing weight, I wouldn't worry too much.

Thank you. This is our first cichlid, so we're a little paranoid about him. My fiance loves this fish to bits. :;tea
