Observing Fish

Here's a tip that I thought I would share with you guys. Sometimes you get a feeling that something is not just right in you aquarium - you get a sense that maybe your fish is getting sick, or there is some serious tank fighting etc; however, when you go in for a closer look, you feel as though you're not getting the "true" story of what is going on because the fish are so aware of your presence. So here is my tip: From the other side of the room, I take my binoculars and use my (8 X's) magnification, and get a ring side seat to what is actually going on in the tank, while the fish are totally unaware that I am checking things out. Works great, and they won't hide or act any differently because they don't know you are there!

Take Care

good idea! another way might be to use a mirror, and then pretend like you're not paying attn, but look at the mirror. I think some have used that method. yours is good too

I can understand the logic in this but I'm laughing so much.............Sneaky fish...........I'm of to get my black clothes and beanie and I'm turning of my lights.............My fish are not gonna trick me and they had better behave while I'm not watching.
Good idea but its just sounds funny ;D

lol.. ask Rose about what they do.. she had a Betta that would literally play 'sick fishie' except when he thought he wasn't being watched.

Yeah I know some fish will act differently when being watched but I'm still laughing I'm just pictureing myself at the other end of the room with binoculars spying on my fish people will think i've gone nuts, although most already do

HI Nicole
First, let me clear something up. If there is a health concern such as ich, or a "mysterious" white fluff on the tails of one of my fish, I can't get a good look at the sickness when they hide on me, and since I don't have hours to sit there and hope the fish comes out from its hiding place, I use what tools that help. I DO NOT appreciate your comments of me playing "spy girl", or insinuate some sort of mental illness. Rather I think it is quite insensitive!

Scotty I sincerley apologise for my comments,
I am I have upset you, which wasn't my intention, and yes I was insensitive.
On another note I was not implying anything toward you,I was refering to myself.I just have to say your post put a smile on my face and made me laugh and that is a compliment, and yes I understand it can be difficult to observe fish if they won't come out while your watching and it is a good idea.
Anyway Scotty I hope you can forgive me for my ignorance :'( nicole

Thanks Nicole! Sorry, I have had a stressful day, and I think I just responded badly to what you were saying. Sometimes, because we are "on the computer", it can convey opinions; but you can't hear tone of voice which can lead to misunderstandings. Thanks, you sound like a very nice person, as it takes a big person to apologize.
Sincerely, Scotti

Hmmm...that is a pretty good idea. Maybe I should try it...it might give me a chance of seeing my catfish once or twice in my lifetime. ;D

Good point, where can I buy some?

probably a military surplus store or hunting store would be the best bet.. online stores could have a better chance of carrying them.

I'll have to buy some and glue them onto my binoculars. When someone asks me what they are, I'll tell them "they're for observing my semi-nocturnal Corydoras pygmaeus..."
;D
